Top ISPs discussing net improvements

Internet service providers are laying the groundwork to improve the browsing experience for users worldwide.

Representatives from nine of the world's largest ISPs are gathering in Brazil for a rare meeting of the Global Internet Alliance.

The aim is to make access more streamlined and less expensive.

The meeting in Sao Paulo is being hosted by Brazil's Universo Online, Latin America's largest ISP with 1.5m subscribers.

Company spokeswoman Celina Monteiro de Barros says the main topics of discussion during the two-day meeting are international roaming, instant messaging standards and international ecommerce.

She says the topics represent "the three principal pillars of support for the establishment of an international ISP network".

The Global Internet Alliance was established in 2000 and comprises ISPs from the UK, Japan, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, Germany and Korea, as well as Brazil.

Together, they represent more than 39 million internet users.
