Warning of more gales on the way

Preparations are being made for another wave of severe gales expected to hit Britain on Friday.

Weather forecasters are predicting gusts of 80mph will affect some parts of the country.

But they do not expect conditions to be as severe as Monday's violent storms, which killed eight people.

Flood agencies have been preparing for rising river levels with rain forecast into the weekend.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has urged people to be prepared. The body is still warning there are 10 flood watch alerts in areas such as Easter Ross, the Firth of Clyde coast and the rivers Tay, Earn and North Esk.

The Environment Agency said a combination of strong southern winds and heavy rain could cause coastal flooding in the southern coasts of England and some localised problems.

A PA WeatherCentre spokesman said: "It is going to be windy tomorrow but not as bad as Monday."

"Monday's gales caused a lot of damage and there is still a risk that things which are loose from the storms could be blown away. As the ground is soggy, there is a risk of trees falling over.

"Gale force and severe gale force winds are expected in the north west of Scotland by the end of tomorrow."

Exposed parts of the north-west of Scotland can expect gusts up to 80mph and coastal areas are also likely to experience strong winds.
