Thompson confident of making title challenge

Phil Thompson predicts Liverpool will go the distance in the title race after watching them chalk up their fifth successive win over Manchester United.

Danny Murphy scored the only goal six minutes from time at Old Trafford to end United's eight-match winning run.

It lifted Liverpool to third in the Premier League table, two points behind the champions and leaders.

And Thompson claimed Liverpool can maintain their challenge despite their struggles in recent weeks.

"We'll be in there," said the Reds' assistant manager. "I can guarantee you that. We will be in there with a shout.

"At the end of the day, Manchester United will be in there and we will be there.

"Teams will take points off one another in the coming months. That's why it's going to be very, very interesting.

"Manchester United have a lot of big games to play, we have and all the teams have.

"We've shown we're capable of beating Manchester United and they've had a great run, they've had a fantastic run.

"I was so glad that they won last Saturday because we always think somewhere along the line it has to end."

Thompson does not want his players to ease up just because they have beaten United and he claims the hard work is just beginning.

He wants them to get past Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday and then build on this win in the league.

"The lads have shown great character after the tricky patch we've been going through," he said.

"We've got to make sure we now push on. We've got an important game on Sunday. We've also got to start making sure we start picking up a lot more league points.

"This win is very nice, it's very, very special coming here and winning, but tomorrow we will be planning for Arsenal."
