Kennedy urges Liverpool to ignore critics

Former Anfield favourite Alan Kennedy says Liverpool should ignore the "boring" jibes emanating from Manchester and stick to what they do best.

Three months after caretaker-boss Phil Thompson took up the reins, the Reds are still coming under fire for their style of play.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed only his side showed any "imagination" and "flair" in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

A repeat of last's season league double arrived thanks to another superb defensive performance and Danny Murphy's late winner.

The accusations are nothing new for Liverpool to contend with, and Kennedy believes the Reds should ignore the critics.

"Liverpool are condemned all the time, it seems," he said.

"It's unfair because the assumption is that a counter-attacking team is boring and can't be entertaining.

"But what I saw - certainly last season when they scored 127 goals and were flying - wasn't boring.

"They play to their strengths. They have the pace of (Michael) Owen, (Emile) Heskey and now (Nicolas) Anelka, so why not use it?

"They have excellent defenders in (Stephane) Henchoz and (Sami) Hyypia, a new goalkeeper in (Jerzy) Dudek who is outstanding, and it works well as a consistent unit. That's their strength."

Kennedy, who now works for local radio, added: "Maybe Liverpool do not have flair players like Manchester United, few teams do.

"What they have got are players who work for each other, and work terribly hard.

"Liverpool do not have players who can run with the ball and attack players, like Ryan Giggs does. But they cost lots of money and Liverpool even now don't have the sort of resources that United do.

"United can collect strikers and attacking players because they have vastly more money than the rest."
