Australian company buys and relaunches KaZaA

Australian firm Sharman Networks has bought and relaunched KaZaA.

The firm immediately restarted operations, days after the site shut down pending the conclusion of a copyright lawsuit.

The popular service has angered the entertainment industry because it allows users to exchange video and audio files online.

Privately-held multimedia firm Sharman confirmed the buy-out by expressing the intention to expand its range of services.

Chief executive Nikki Hemming said: "We value the millions of users of KaZaA's software and will continue to enhance and grow our core offerings."

But its future will remain unclear until the conclusion of its copyright case with the Dutch music industry group Buma/Stemra.

KaZaA was ordered in November to prevent users from freely downloading copyright protected material.

It was threatened with fines of £28,000 a day, up to a maximum of £560,000.

The court is expected to rule before the end of the month.

The website has already reported brisk business after resuming, logging about two new users per second.
