Cat's ashes causes anthrax scare

A security alert began after a cat's ashes were mistaken for anthrax powder.

Mandy caused a security scare after being cremated in New Zealand and left outside her owner's house with no label.

Police secured the area in Nelson until the contents of the suspicious package was confirmed to be a cremated cat.

The cat's remains had been left by the vet in an unmarked brown paper parcel on the window-sill at the home of her owners, Lorraine and Bob Fisher.

They thought it suspicious and called police - not knowing the white powder was in fact the remains of their beloved 18-year-old cat.

Officers secured the area as a potential anthrax site, putting on rubber gloves to secure the package before returning it to the police station.

The contents of the bag were about to be sent away for analysis when the mystery was solved.

"A girl from the vet rang and asked us if we had got the parcel on the window-sill," Mrs Fisher told The Nelson Mail.

"She had dropped off Mandy's ashes on the way home. Bob just rolled off the chair laughing."

Constable Steve Hopkinson said: "It could have been a drug deal gone to the wrong house or an anthrax scare. We kept an open mind, and just as well."
