Woman finishes Atlantic row alone after husband quit

A British woman has rowed across the Atlantic alone after her husband abandoned the three-month trip after two weeks.

Debra Veal from south-west London has reached Barbados after rowing 3,000 miles from the Canary Islands.

Her husband Andrew developed a fear of the ocean and had to abandon the attempt.

They set off on October 7.

Mrs Veal, 27, told reporters: "I'm really excited. I'm going to see my family and my

husband for the first time in three months."

Mrs Veal, a former PE instructor who now runs her own internet company, powered the 23ft, 750kg Troika Transatlantic, surviving on beef stew and dumplings.

They were the only husband-and-wife team out of 36 pairs of amateur rowers in the race. They said they wanted to spend "quality time" together.

Mrs Veal, last to finish, said: "It has been a really mixed journey with ups and downs along the way. I had a very bad moment when I nearly got run down by a supertanker which passed me by a few hundred metres.
