Tartan Army turn down request to back England in World Cup

Scottish football's Tartan Army have turned down a request to support England in this summer's World Cup.

The Scottish Tourism Forum wanted fans to fly to Japan to act as "English-friendly" ambassadors to attract more visitors to Scotland.

But the Tartan Army says it will never support England and even claims it will travel to Gothenburg to back Sweden against Sven-Goran Eriksson's team.

Ivan Broussine, of the forum, told the Daily Record: "The Tartan Army should adopt the English team. We could fly out members of the Tartan Army to the World Cup to show the serious and mature way Scotland can present itself.

"The English make up our largest visitor numbers and we want them to continue to spend their money here. But there is a real question about whether the English like the Scots' attitude towards them."

Tartan Army spokesman Don Lawson said: "There is no way we would back the Auld Enemy. We are well structured now in the Tartan Army and, if it was put to a vote, there would be an overwhelming decision not to give them our backing.

"Their World Cup win in 1966 has been rammed down our throats for more than 35 years, yet they never mention the England team's first game after that triumph when we beat them 3-2.

"It goes against the grain to support the English and, if the shoe was on the other foot, there's no way they would get behind us."
