Aboriginal leader wants police chief speared to death

An Aboriginal leader has asked Australia's High Court for permission to spear a police chief to death.

He claims Detective Superintendent Brian Hepworth desecrated a sacred fire in Canberra.

Aboriginal elder Darren Bloomfield says he should be tried under white law and then handed over to his people for punishment.

Mr Bloomfield, in documents published in Fairfax newspapers on Sunday, also alleges that Hepworth tried to run over him in a police car.

The incident happened on July 11, 2001, when police took action during a fire ceremony at the Aboriginal tent embassy on the lawns of Old Parliament House in Canberra.

Established to highlight Aboriginal land claims and the push for a treaty with white Australia, the embassy was abandoned in 1975 but rebuilt in 1992. It has been a frequent target of police action in past years.

"(He should be) tried under white law and then handed over to us under our law where he would be speared to death," Mr Bloomfield said.

"Acting on behalf of the Australian commonwealth government, Supt Hepworth attempted to endanger (my) life by the use of a commonwealth vehicle. He also ordered the extinguishing of the fire and under Aboriginal law has incurred the death penalty."

Mr Hepworth, who has been with the Australian Federal Police for more than 30 years, was not available for comment.

Mr Bloomfield's case is scheduled to be heard on March 22.
