Eight-time World Champion Team Roping Header Speed Williams is retiring from active rodeo competition to focus on a new team roping concept called Speed's Match Roping.
Williams, 41, claimed his ProRodeo record eight world titles with heeler Rich Skelton from 1997 to 2004 and surpassed $2 million in career earnings at last December's Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Williams made the announcement after selling his horses and listing his ranch in De Leon, Texas, for sale and moving his family to Scottsdale, Ariz.
"After a lot of consideration after the Houston rodeo, I decided this is the right time in my life to make the decision,� Williams said, �even though it happened about seven or eight years earlier than I expected.�

He first posted the announcement, accompanied by a video message, on his blog at www.matchroping.com on April 10.

Shortly before the finals Jake's Mom said that Clay was going to start roping with Speed this year. Now Clay's without a partner but that won't last long. Now I see that Jake placed in Arizona somewhere with Rich recently. The good news is that plenty of good ropers would jump at the chance to rope with any of those guys, but it still looks like it would be stressfull playing musical partners. - When I was in college they use to have some spring team ropings. Only cost you $15 to enter. I think there was a one header, a two header and a few three headers. Was cheap practice with a chance to win money. A couple of them were a draw partner. And its funny how sometimes you roped better with the draw partner then your regular partner. I seen at Houston the team that won the $50,000 had never roped together. Maybe is just to much of knowing all the moves your partner makes and neither one of you concentrates as well as you would with a stranger. (NT) -- Varmit, 16:35:45 04/15/09 Wed

      - After the Camarillos started teaching their style of roping heels instead of laying a trap the left handers didn't have that advantage any more.
