Rodeo friend passes away

November 8, 2008 - 7:02PM
I just wanted to let the folks of the Yuma area know that a great cowboy has passed on. If you've been to the Yuma Jaycees Silver Spur Rodeo, you will no doubt remember the tones of our announcer of many years, Johnny Pope. Johnny was a true friend of the Jaycees and was loved and respected by rodeo cowboys nationwide.

According to Johnny's obituary in the Mobile Alabama newspaper, "John William "Johnny" Pope, III - a 66-year-old resident of Semmes - passed away in Phoenix, Ariz. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008. Mr. Pope, a professional rodeo announcer for 35 years, was a Gold Card Member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He was a veteran of the Alabama Army National Guard 711th Signal Battalion, was the Cowboy Polo World Champion Runner-up in 1969, and was inducted into the Mobile County Horseman's Hall of Fame. He loved riding and training horses and as a singer/songwriter enjoyed playing Western music."

Burial was in Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile on Nov. 6.

I along with several Jaycees rodeo committeemen have lost a good friend. I have lost a true friend, a friend I could count on always. Marilyn and I send our love, respects and prayers to his lovely bride Janet. Rest easy, cowboy...
