The U-S House has voted to prevent the government from selling off for slaughter any wild horses and burros that roam public lands in the West.

The vote yesterday (Thursday) was 277-to-137. The bill would restore a 1971 law blocking the federal Bureau of Land Management from selling horses or burros for commercial processing.

The protection was removed in 2004, when former Republican Senator Conrad Burns of Montana inserted a measure in a spending bill allowing the sales.

The bill is the first of two horse slaughter measures Congress is expected to consider this year. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved a bill Wednesday that would outlaw horse slaughter nationally.

- I read where somebody brought up a good idea. If unwanted cats and dogs can be dropped off at the human societies, will horses fit in the same catagory if they get this bill passed to ban the slaughter houses.
