My wife is a christian and we are seperated going through a divorce.I am the one who has asked for the divorce do to her wanting to make our children kafir and just not getting along.Am I required to pay her maintenance as surah 2:241 says or does this apply to me.

As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

Allah says in the quran, the interpretation of the meaning;

"...And for divorced women, maintenance (should be provided) on reasonable (scale). This is a duty on Al-Muttaq�n (the pious - see V.2:2)..." [Surat 2:241]

This verse applies to the "iddah" period. A man is required to maintain the woman during the "iddah" period or "waiting" period of the divorce. This Ayat does not mean that after a man divorces a woman he must give me money.

After the Iddah period has ended, the couple are divorced and the man does not owe payment to the woman then.
