Assalaamu Alaykum
This concerns the appointment of an Imam to replace the existing one in a Masjid. The present one feels he is too old to carryout his duties as Imam. He has been told by the Mufti of the Dar ul Uloom in Trinidad that he must appoint his replacement. However he is not of this view since he feels this would cause more fitnah to what already exist in the jamaat. Some members are clamouring for election by voting since there are persons equally qualified to be appointed as Imam.
But he knows that he should get the Islamic Ruling from Qur'an and Sunnah. Please advise on what is the correct thing to do.

As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

The person to lead should be the one who knows the most Quran. If all are equal in that, then the one who knows the most about the Sunnah. If all are equal in that, then the one who embraced Islam first. If all are equal in that, then the one who is the oldest:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Anyone who is most versed in Allah's Book should act as an Imam for the people; but if they are equally versed in reciting it, then the one who has most knowledge regarding the Sunnah; if they are equal regarding the Sunnah, then the earliest of them to emigrate; if they emigrated at the same time then the oldest of them. [Muslim]
