As salamu Alaikum, I was recently approach by a new (to the community) sister and she asked me why was I sitting outside the Musalla? I told her I was on my menses and I was waiting for salat to finish and the room be turned back into a classroom (just so you understand, we only have one room to worship and part of it, the first half, was in use as the musalla). She told me that menses is not a disease and that I am depriving myself of blessings by not offering salat while I am on my menses. I corrected her by telling her that a woman is impure while on her menses and that we are not allowed to offer at that time. She responded, "Listen sister I have been Muslim for forty years and believe me you can offer when you are menstrating. You just can't do the physical postions." She continued by saying that Allah gave us the mercy of being able to offer mentally while sitting in a chair because many women cramp and endure pain when on their menses." This scard me that she said she had been Muslim for forty years and believed this. Like always I went home and researched the matter and found only documentation to prove what she said was wrong.I read to the sister from Sahih Al-Bukhari " There is no Salat to be offered by a menstrating woman in lieu of the missed salat during her menses (216 summarized version and A menstruating woman should leave observing Saum(210). It was also a statement about menses and the musalla in 218 that the menstrruating woman should keep away from the musalla. I am collecting more books to educate myself on a variety of matters, but the resources I have available say this is wrong. I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

Every Muslim woman should know that she is prohibited from praying and fasting when on her period. There is no further research needed to be done on this because it is clear from the Quran and the Sunnah that a woman can not perform these things when impure. For a woman to be Muslim all her life and not know this, is just pure ignorance.

Also, women are prohibited from going to the Mosque on their periods too.

You need to understand what Musalla is. Musalla is an arabic word that simply means place of prayer and this refers to when Praying out side... it does not refer to the Masjid.

A woman can not attend the Mosque when on her period:

The Prophet(saw) saw that his companions houses were near the mosque. He said, "Direct those houses away from the mosque." He then entered the Mosque and then he came out and he said, "Direct those houses away from the Mosque for it is not permitted for menstruating women or the sexually impure person to be in the Mosque [Abu Dawud]

Umm Salama related that the Prophet(saw) came the the courtyard of the Mosque and announced, "The Mosque is off limits to menstrating women and sexually impure persons." [Ibn Majah and Tabarani]

So sister you need to also stay away from the Mosque when you are on your period.

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
