assalam alaikum

i live in UK and as u will know it is a kaffir country and so when im walking out in the streets and i see muslims i dont know i feel happy and i wish to send salams on them also so if i see a brother i wil say assalam alaikum to them.
my question is, am i also allowed to say assalam alaikum to a sister i happen to pass by on the streets? i mean say im walking on the pavement(sidewalk) and i see a sister walking ahead of me coming my way can i say assalam alaikum to her just in passing...im not talking about stopping or chatting or anything like that, im just saying is it ok to say asslam alaikum to her in passing???

One of the duties in which we owe to our fellow brothers and sisters in Islam is to greet them. [Bukhari and Muslim]

Also, the Prophet(saw) said, "A good Muslim is one who greets those whom he knows and those whom he knows not in the land" [Bukhari]

However, if a Muslim woman feels that it may cause fitnah to answer your salaams, then she doesnt have to answer you..
