kalam
kah-lam'; Arab.
The word simply means "speech, talk, utterance." In technical usage, however, it early acquired the connotation of "argument.
Ilm al-Kalam: a science in which one investigates the Being and attributes of God, and the conditions of possible things with respect to creation and restitution, the issue of predestination (jabr) and free will (ikhtiyar), and that of Divine Justice.
The Beginnings of Kalam:
Though nothing definite can be said about the beginnings of 'ilm al-kalam among Muslims, what is certain is that discussion of some of the problems of kalam, such as the issue of predestination (jabr) and free will (ikhtiyar), and that of Divine Justice, became current among Muslims during the first half of the second century of Hijrah.
Gradually the points of difference between the two groups( the group which believe in JABR &the group which believe in IKHTYAR) extended to a series of other issues in theology, physics, sociology and other problems relating to man and the Resurrection, of which the problem of jabr and ikhtiyar was only one. During this period, the "qadariyyah" came to be called "Mu'tazilah" and the "jabriyyah" became known as "Asha'irah.
Pure Islamic beliefs were dirtied, corrupted by the movement called 'Ilm al-kalam."
Imam al-Tirmidhi said, in his 'Jami`',
"The approach of the people of knowledge from among the Imams, such as Sufyan al-Thawri, Malik ibn Anas, Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn `Uyaynah, Waki` and others, is that they related these things, and then said, 'These ahadith are related, and we believe in them, and one may not ask 'How?' '. This is the way preferred by the scholars of hadith, that these things should be related, as they have appeared, they should be believed in and should not be interpreted, one should not exercise one's imagination over them, nor ask 'how?' "
Early Salafis did not go into details about the attributes of Allahu ta'ala.
Ibn Taymiyyah, who was one of the eminent scholars of the Sunni world, gave a verdict declaring kalam and logic as 'unlawful'. Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, another figure among the Ahl al-Hadith, has written a book called Sawn al-mantiq wa al-kalam 'an al-mantiq wa al-kalam ("Protecting speech and logic from [the evil of] 'ilm al-kalam and the science of logic"). , Malik ibn Anas is another Sunni imam who considers any debate or inquiry about doctrinal matters to be unlawful.
Muslims should not read in the books of ilm al kalam, because it is not only wasting of time ,but it also can take the person away of Islam.
