As Salaamu Alaikoum,
First of all, when a person is dead he is dead and as such he can not hear you. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“but you cannot make hear those who are in graves”
[Faatir 35:22] and
"Verily, you cannot make the dead to hear…" [al-Naml 27:80]
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: sadaqah jaariyah (ongoing charity, e.g. a waqf or endowment), beneficial knowledge (which he has left behind), or a righteous child who will pray for him." (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no 1376; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth).
Since a persons deeds comes to an end at his death, what makes you think that a dead person can receive your reward of reading Quran? They can not even hear your, more less receive your reward.
The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not read Quraan for the Muslims who died, such as his daughters who died during his lifetime, neither did the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them all). So it is better for the believer not to do that and not to read Qur’aan for either the dead or the living, or to offer salaah or fast voluntarily on their behalf, because there is no evidence for any of these things.
The basic principle regarding acts of worship is to refrain from everything except that which is proven to be enjoined by Allaah or by His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). For a person to continue to indulge in acts of worship not proven to be enjoined by Allah or his Messenger is bid'ah.
Also, Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [al-Maa’idah 5:27]
Part of being pious is avoiding bid’ah and shunning false beliefs which are based on ignorance. The commonly held belief that the reward for reading Qur’aan reaches the dead cannot be taken as definitive. The evidence (daleel) of sharee’ah does not indicate that, so giving the reward for reading Qur’aan to the deceased is not an action that is prescribed by sharee’ah.
For one to continue to indulge in acts of bid'ah in worship, one then crosses over to committing the sin of Shirk.
AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
