I belong to some email groups and a few messages have been posted regarding using food for beauty purposes (i.e. using honey, eggs, etc. for the hair) and also using food for teaching children (i.e. using flour, etc. for making playdoh or paints for the children to use.)

My problem is that someone keeps posting to the group saying that using food in this manner is wasteful and not allowed in Islam. What (if anything) is said about this matter in Islam?

In regards to using foods for purposes other than eating:

Narrated Ibn Abbas
The Prophet said, "Healing is in three things: A gulp of
HONEY, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing).
But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding
with fire." [Bukhari 7.584]

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that Asma bint Abi Bakr had worn clothes that were completely dyed with SAFFLOWER while she was in ihram, though there was not any saffron in them. [Muwatta 20.11]

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wear tanned leather sandals and dye his beard yellow with wars and SAFFRON. And Ibn Umar used to do that. [Nasa'i transmitted it.]

Anas bin Malik said
Al-Husain resembled the Prophet more than the others did." Anas added, "His (i.e. Al-Husain's) hair was dyed with Wasma (i.e. a kind of plant used as a dye)." [Bukhari 5.91]

CONCLUSION: Those are a few examples of things that can be eaten such as Safron, Saflower, Honey, and Wasma that were used by the Prophet(saw) and his sahaba for purposes besides food. How can an intelligent person think that something is wasted if it is being used??? Beware of email listings and in the future whenever a person tells you something is haram tell them to either produce their evidence or keep quiet.
