Dear Sister,

If a unmarried Muslim man tries to force himself on a unmarried Muslim woman (rape) does she have to marry this man if he asks her? Won't it be hard for her to marry anyone else after this has happened? Also, should she take him to the police or should she forgive him and leave the punishment to God? Though the rape wasn't technically completed, it went very far and she is very traumatised, depressed, and feels very guilty and ashamed and sad after this experience.

First Of all I do not know much in regards to the details of this event but the first question that comes to mind is what was the girl doing in a situation whereas she was alone with a man?

Under no circumstances is a female to be alone with a man who is not her Husband or Mahram. The reason Allah makes these laws for us is not to punish us but to protect us from situations such as this one here. By obeying Allah and his Prophet(saw) this prevents you from being in a situation such as that. If the girl deliberately chose to be alone with this man then she should feel guilty.. guilty and shamed of disobeying Allah. And she must repent to Allah for disobeying him and commiting an act of zinna by meeting with a man in private.

In regards to your questions..No women can be forced to marry anyone against their will. It doesnt matter if the man raped her, committed zinna with her or anything else:

"My father married me to his nephew, and I did not like this match, so I complained to the Messenger of Allah . He said to me: `Accept what your father has arranged.' I said, `I do not wish to accept what my father has arranged.' He said, `Then this marriage is invalid, go and marry whomever you wish.' [Bukhari and Muslim]

In regards to should she go to the police, again I do not know the whole story but rape is a serious offense not only in Islam but in society as well and if a person commits this tregedy then the victim should seek justice thru whatever means is available..
