As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

Yes the prophet(saw) led a life of simplicity but having things is not prohibited in Islam. The Prophet(saw) chose to live the way he did so as to teach others that material gains does not place one above others. However he did not restrict us from enjoying the bounties of life and neither does Allah. Says Allah:

"Of the bounties of thy Lord We bestow freely on all these as well as those: the bounties of thy Lord are not closed (to anyone)." [Quran 17:20]

"And there are men who say: "Our Lord! give us good
in this world and good in the Hereafter and defend us
from the torment on the fire!" To these will be allotted what they have earned and Allah is quick in account." [Quran 2:201-202]

So thus having things is not prohibited in Islam so long as you do not allow your material gains to keep you from fearing Allah.
