As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

There is nothing wrong with reading books of technology or books of other subjects other than islam that will be of benefit. As Muslims we should have knowledge of technology and other things of the world, in addition to our knowledge of our religion. The types of books one should stay away from are books of fiction and the like which do not benefit one in any way.

In regards to the mixing of men and women in university, many scholars say that as longs as the proper rules of dress and adhab are followed then there is nothing wrong with learning in a mixed environment such as college.

Also, remember that no one is held accountable for the sins of someone else. If others around you are committing sins such as Zina and the like, you are not held accountable for what they do. If they are Muslims whom you know then you can remind them of the words of Allah and his prophet in regards to the consequences of those who disobey their commands. Other than that, there is nothing else you can do. Remember, Only Allah makes Muslims and make sure that you stay away from that which is haraam.

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST

Laila Nasheeba
