The reason for the long grip in NG, according to Todd Graves, is that in the beginning of NG the hands were seperated as far as 2 inches. When they brought the hands together they left the grip long which allows you to seperate your hands or chock down on the club for distance control or balance.

I have seperated my hands so that the fingers do not touch when I had a sore finger. Hit the ball the same.
