Evelyn's Apartment

The first thing you notice, besides the gleaming plaque announcing to the world that this is Evelyn's apartment, is the mat at your feet, which displays the prominent word 'welcome', bordered by golden horseshoes. An eye-attracting sign draws your attention to the fact that there is a doorbell, meaning that you should not knock on the door, is tacked next to spherical button with an arrow directing you to it in the event that you are partially blind. You take care to ring the doorbell, noticing that Evelyn apparently takes time to polish her door and probably would not take too kindly to having it rapped on impatiently. Judging from the sounds that drift to your ears from within the apartment, you can tell that she is hurrying to get to the door. Moments later it swings open abruptly, revealing a blithe face and Evelyn saying, "Hey" as she pulls her highlighted hair back with both hands. Completing this task, she looks you over briefly, then points to the mat, indicating without words that you should wipe your feet on the mat before entering. "Oh, and don't forget--never, never ever wear your shoes inside my home." She waves a hand for emphasis, then gestures at the shoe rack, identical to Arianna's, just inside the door.

There is another rug inside, this one saying "Home Sweet Home", and beyond that there is a clean wood floor. A short hallway stretches down straight ahead, two darkened doorways set close to one another lining the right side. At the far end, yet another doorway shows the only place where the wooden floor gives way to carpeting--in her bedroom. A plain twin-size bed, off-white sheets and light-blue comforter giving the impression that she doesn't care much for fancy designs, occupies most of the space in the small, lone bedroom. One doorway on the right leads to the bathroom; another goes to the laundry room, also home to the riding equipment that she keeps within her home as spares. Before the hallway, to the right, is a spacious room, half kitchen, half family room. The kitchen is small, with a stove, oven, microwave, and tiny refrigerator. A square table with two wooden chairs--just in case--on opposite ends is in the middle of the space. The family room floor is cloaked with a large, light-colored rug. On it are a sofa that could sit two at most and a TV almost smaller than the monitor screen size of her "big computer" (as she calls it), which is right next to the television. Both electronic devices have been placed on a sturdy--if not small--table. A computer chair like the one in her office has been put before the computer, which is currently in standby mode, with the monitor turned off. The whole apartment has only one picture in it, that of a sweet-looking bay gelding with his nose buried in a field of grass dotted with colorful wildflowers. It is apparently an enlarged snapshot, and hangs on one side of the hallway. A silver plaque like the one on Evelyn's door reads "Li'l Bit o' Luck--The best horse any girl could ever have had".

All this you take in in a moment's time. Your observations are interrupted by Evelyn's voice: "So, what'd you come here for?"

A significantly loud yawn interrupts her exhausted frown as she remembers dimly that she still has some paperwork to complete. Tomorrow, she tells herself, smothering another yawn as she gets up slowly, knees creaking, and hobbles, pajamas, pigtail braids and all, to the lights switch, turning it to off and continuing on down the pitch-black hallway to her room, where she fumbles for the light switch, gazes briefly at the picture of her late horse, Li'l Bit o' Luck, as she does every night, and sinks into bed with a contented sigh, out almost before she can turn on her night light.
