Subject: "Fae Moment"

One evening while I walked through the forest night
Not a sound to be heard nor a soul in sight

Between my feet
One faerie raced forward,
Smartly dressed in a uniform,
That reminded me of ages and tales of yore,
Tumbling over a mushroom,
A little soldier,
Rolling head over heels in unseemly haste...

And suddenly I heard
What seemed to be an oncoming thunder
Hundreds of feet thumping,
Stomping,
Astounding me;
I'd never heard such sound!
Such thunder, yet so minute!

And lo, all around me,
A tiny calvary,
Through the deepness of the forest,
Tiny horses swarming around my feet,
Fireflies whizzing by my ears,
Moth riders gliding down the trees,
Noble foot soldiers and
Cunning sharp-eyed archers
Sending fiery arrows into the air
Casting flicking lights that trickled
Or flares that rolled across the ground
Surrounding me with
Fae illumination.

"Make way! Make way! Make way!"

Amidst that rushing mass,
Rode a queen
Regally tiny
Resplendent despite her size
Escorted among the towering trees.
She turned to face me from below
Her eyes pierced me with their benevolence
As she rode past
A majestic sight for the evening!

But the entourage stopped at the bank of a river
The waters fell over the rocks
Swelling,
Threateningly,
Daring
Like undulating snakes searching for prey.
Imperially, a general gazed
Over the surface of the obstacle,
His steed restless beneath him.

And he plunged forward.

All followed suit,
Speed and strength
Surging into the great waves
Riding through, striding
Unstoppably,
Jewels strewn across the surface of the water
To the other bank.

And they disappeared into the darkness
With just a twinkle.
