Subject: Winter Wonderland

It was a foggy day. Fallen snow lay on the ground. I bundled up in 3 pairs of socks, my winter riding boots, the armest jods I owned, a long sleeve riding shirt, and my warmest riding jacket. I suited up Whirlwind in her warmest clothes, too, including her extra grip horse shoes. We were ready for the three - hour trail that lay ahead of us. I attatched the saddle bags to my saddle, with weather covers. We trotted carefully up the winding trail. I was enjoying the scenery. We soon reached a flat part of the mountain. It was covered with trees except for one spot about 1/2 an acre wide. It was a perfect place to rest. I slipped off Whirlwind's saddle, so only the winter turnout was on her back. I then took the reins off her bridle, so she wouldn't trip over them. I put her in the old, small corral a few feet away. Whirlwind was probably thirsty from the hike we had endured. I went to the small brook with my canteen (empty). I pomked a hole in its ice and filled the canteen with its cool water. I then took matches from a saddle bag and started a fire under the canteen. Soon the water was the right temperature for Whirlwind. I then took a tupper ware container from another saddle bag and filled it with the water. I rested it on the fence of the corral so Whirlwind could drink. I took out a smaller container filled with mash and added the left over water with it. I then gave it to Whirlwind to eat. Then I took out my lunch and ate it under a tree. I saddled Whirlwind back up and we hit the trails. We returned home within an hour. I went into the willow barn where Kass ( the malamute) was happy to see me.
