Nicholaus' tutor did not like the look he saw on Lady Cheril's face when she stormed into the study. "Leave us," she spat, her eyes flashing with anger. Once the man stepped out of the room, Cheril slammed the door before hurrying to sit at her son's side. "You will say nothing to your grandmother about those men that visited today, do you understand?"

Although Nicholaus really didn't understand why he couldn't talk about the visitors, he nodded slowly. "I told you he'd come. I dream about Marz all the time, mama. He's gonna take me for a ride onna dragon and buy me a real sword too!"

Cheril grabbed her son by the shoulders and shook him. "Don't ever talk about him again, Nicholaus! Marz is a very evil man, who wants only to hurt us!"

The boy's lower lip quivered a little as he stared into his mother's angry eyes. "But, he was nice to me, mommy."

"Stop it Nicholaus!" Cheril hissed. "You don’t know him as well as I do. He was only pretending to be nice! Marz is vicious, and can be quite cruel. He enjoys making little boys and their mothers suffer. When we were alone in the stable, he slapped me and nearly broke my arm!" She released her hold on Nicholaus' shoulders then showed him the bruise on her forearm where Marz had grabbed her. "Do you want him to keep hurting me, Nicholaus?"

Sapphire blues eyes filled with tears as they stared at the ugly bruise. Nicholaus shook his head quickly from side to side. "No mommy, I don't want him to hurt us!"

A hint of a smile crossed Cheril's mouth before she gave her son a hug. "I'm going to get someone to take care of Marz after we finish having lunch with your grandmother. Then we'll never have to worry about him trying to cause trouble ever again."

"He's YOUR child Marz, and that makes him mine, too," Tristan said. "He belongs with us!"

Marz smiled in relief as his arm tightened around his soulmate's shoulders. He knew that Tristan didn't get along very well with children, and was worried that he might hate Nicholaus. The happiness he felt in his heart was reflected on his face when the dragon went on to tell him that his son probably loved him for a long time and viewed him as a hero. It still amazed him how Nicholas had seen him in his dreams. And somehow he knew that Tris and I were looking at him last night when we used the crystal ball!

His thoughts were distracted by Tristan's mouth crushing against his for a deep, passionate kiss. The dragon's open display of affection in public only intensified his happiness. Not having to wait until they were alone to share a hug or kiss was wonderful! When he sensed weariness wash over his lover once their lips parted, Marz shifted slightly, allowing Tristan to rest against him more comfortably.

Shortly after his soulmate fell asleep, Marz dozed off as well. He was in the middle of a dream about sharing cotton candy with Tristan and Nikki at a festival when he was awakened by the wagon coming to an abrupt stop. Now that he was no longer propelled by rage, Marz had some difficulty getting his legs to work properly again. He allowed Corum to help him down from the wagon while Noyko assisted Tristan.

Once they were seated at a table with food and beverages set out before them, Marz gulped down some java. He still felt rather tired and hoped the strong beverage would give him some much needed energy. When Corum mentioned teaching one of the urchins how to use a staff for the purpose of becoming a future protector to Nicholaus, Marz grinned. He met Corum's eyes and nodded his approval. He wanted his son to have a loyal friend like he had found in the skull-staff wielder.

"I don’t think Nicholaus is going to be starting any gangs," Tristan interjected. "Not with HER for a mother."

A frown crossed Marz's face as he thought about how prim and proper his little boy was. Obviously, the need for good manners at all times was drilled into his head constantly. "It does seem like Nikki is lacking in the fun department," he said, softly.

Tristan really snagged his attention when he went on to say that Cheril was probably hiring some guards to track them down. "And you told her where we live, too!"

The ex-gang leader shrugged. "If she sends someone after us, we'll handle it Tris. Then once we beat the crap outta the creeps we'll pay a visit to Cheril's mother-in-law and tell her who Nikki's real father is. After that, Cheril can go find herself another rich noble to marry and my son can come live with us permanently."

He popped a piece of cheese into his mouth and glanced around the common room before tossing an arm over Tristan's shoulders. "A small room in this tavern is not really a good place for the three of us to live, you know? We're gonna have to buy a house." After washing the cheese down with more java, he glanced at Corum and Noyko before his eyes came to rest on his lover. "Maybe we can get our friends together and build a raking house nearby here. I mean, how hard can that be?" The ex-gang leader's eyes lit up with excitement as his gaze shifted back to the food on his plate. "What do you guys think?" he asked. "Sounds easy enough to me. I wonder how long it would take us to build a decent sized house."
