I could go on all day. I did see Z although it was dubbed (gasp). I hate dubbing, it sounds so bad and flat. Its OK in kung fu or Godzilla movies but in others its way too distracting. I liked Life is Beautiful as well. Lots of foreign films don't have the pacing of Hollywood films so one has to shift gears and prepare for a slow pace.

I took my wife to see a festival of Czech and Slovak films. Some of their films are very funny and charming. But some are very intellectual and boring.

Rashomon is thought of as a classic. Its rep is based on the showing of a story from several POVs, something rather new at the time and imitated often. The actor who played the bandit, Toshiro Mufine, is in many Japanese samurai films and is the basis of John Belushi's samurai character. He's got a near animalistic presence, sometimes goes over the top as do many Japanese actors, I guess its part of their acting tradition.

8 1/2 can be confusing seen in order, forget about mixed up. Fellini's early films are more straight forward fare like La Strada but after 8 1/2 they get weird, very dream-like and episodic. One later film I liked was Amarcord which was the story of the town Fellini grew up in during the 30s, an often imitated nostalgia film before nostalgia films were in vogue. But then he made films like Satrycon which was based on a fragmented story from Ancient Rome. The whole film shows the debauchery of those days and jumps around without explainations as thats all we know of the story. Fellini called it "a science fiction film set in the past", amazing visuals and sets but hard to understand or invest in. There are many pretentious European directors.

Of course, the AFI is only to honor American films as thats what the A stands for. I'd love to see other genre lists although 100 westerns or detective movies or war films might be strech. Maybe do a night of several genres with only the top 20 in each.

I've seen lots cause my mission is to see every movie ever made, I think I've got a good start. Hey its only 100 years cinema's been around so there can't be that many.:)
