the fanfic world does seem to be pretty female-dominated, both in readers and writers! I can count on one hand the number of feedbacks I've received from guys in re my fanfic. When guys *do* write, I think they generally tend to stick more to actual case file type stories, while women tend to more do the romantic or humorous ones.
I think this is just a natural outcome of the way men and women generally view TV series. My husband watches a lot more TV than I do, but he's pretty easygoing about whether he misses an ep of any particular series or not. (His quote: "It will come on again in reruns, so who cares?") And he *never* visits websites, readd fanfics, etc. connected to the shows he watches. I, on the other hand, don't watch much TV at all - maybe two or three series - but when I get "into" a series, I really get into it. . .as you've probably noticed!
I also think the core audience of XF kinda shifted over the years. The first couple of seasons, I think it was mainly watched by males in the 14-25 year old age range. As the show continued, I think it began to appeal more to women and more to people in the 30-plus age range.
