Teachings 2

John 8:30 – 32 As He spake these words, many believed on Him. Then said Jesus to those Jews who believed on Him, If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

intouch.org radio 7/21/16 How the truth can set you free - part 9

9:09

You know the truth when the Holy Spirit of God makes that verse a priority in your life - that truth a priority. You begin to think about it and pray over it and ask God to show you how that applies to your life. Continuing in the Word to know the truth. What is the truth?

The truth about what your position is.

The truth about who you are and what you have.

As these truths become a part of your thinking all of the sudden here's what happens. You begin to realize that the old patterns begin to crack. The old thought patterns and pre-programming begins to shatter and before long, like thin plate glass, they begin to crumble in your mind and what happens they are replaced with solid, Scriptural, divine, God-given truths of:

What your position is: I am in Christ forever.

Who I am: A saint, an ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ. A child of God. A servant of the Lord.

What do I have? Everything I'll ever need. All that I need to be what God wants me to be. All that I need whenever a need arises. An inheritance provided. Access to it. Fellowship with the Father.

And you see, as these truths begin to be a part of our thinking, what happens is...here's what happens, we resort to new thought patterns, new ideas, that is, we have given up the false for the truth.

And therefore what happens? If I have been responding toward the false, I'm going to act in that way, which is not in pleasing with God. So if I begin to respond properly, what's going to happen? I'm going to have the results of responding properly to Him. Security - so I'm not going to be anxious and fretting about things.

12:13

Continuing in the Word until what? Until those truths have shattered old truths and now you're able to respond positively, moving in God's direction so that old patterns are no longer harrassing you because you have chosen to do what? Not only to believe the truth but you've chosen to live by the truth. And my friend, the old patterns break up. When you get your attitude toward yourself, and you see yourself the way God sees you, I want to tell you everything in you is going to change.

18:37

The choice is yours. And you'll either choose to remain in bondage or you'll choose to be free. satan will attack you. he'll put pressure on you. You keep claiming your position, claiming your person, claiming your possessions, thanking God, moving on - regardless of what satan does, the truth is that you are free because you've chosen to be free and you have applied the truth that sets you free. And He says: the truth known and applied in your heart frees you and liberates you to become the person God wants you to be, achieve what God wants to achieve and to reach your potential.

6:30

Now listen, He says the truth will set you free from all this junk – all the things that hinder you from being what God wants you to be in order that you may be what? That you may be liberated and freed to what? Freed to serve God by pouring your life into the lives of other people who are hurting. Friend listen, you can’t pour you life into somebody else’s life if your mind is just fastened upon you and the only thing you can think about is “me, myself and I” - there’s no way to do it.

Until you learn to allow God to love you and accept yourself just the way you are, you can’t accept everybody else the way they are - you can’t pour your life into somebody else’s life……And if I’m “free from” just for myself, I’ve missed the whole point…I’m still in bondage to old self.

7:07

You’ll notice in this 15th chapter….here is the Trinity all in one verse – the 26th verse says, Jesus speaking in the upper room: “when the Helper (capital H) comes Whom I will send to you from the Father that is the Spirit of Truth Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of Me.” God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit – all in this one verse. And notice, when the Helper comes – a Helper couldn’t be a “some thing”, He is a Somebody. When the Helper, Who is the Spirit, Whom I Jesus will send to you from the Father – God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit – all at work. Now if somebody says: “well now, Who is the Holy Spirit?” What are you going to say? He is a Person of the Trinity. The second thing I want you to notice about Him is: He is the Promise of the Father. And if you’ll notice in this 49th verse listen to what Jesus said. He said: “behold, I am sending forth the Promise of My Father upon you but are to stay in the city until you are clothed with Power from on high.” He’s the Promise of the Father. God promised to send the Person of the Holy Spirit. And He promised to send Him as the Helper.

10:06

The Holy Spirit is not somebody we pray to get. The Holy Spirit is not Someone we work for to get. When you were saved, the Spirit of God sealed you at that moment as a child of God – He came to indwell you. And the Bible distinguishes between believers and unbelievers as those who are indwelt by the Spirit and those who are not indwelt by the Spirit. Not by conduct – though that’s important, not by behavior – though that’s important, but the fact we are either sealed and indwelt by the Holy Spirit or we are not. You don’t have to get Him. The baptism of the Spirit is not something that you get, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the work of the Holy Spirit at your salvation when He places you in Christ and makes you a part of the whole body of Christ. And so that’s what he was referring to in 1st Corinthians chapter 12 when he talks about baptizing us into Christ Jesus – making us one of His.

So therefore, when somebody says “well, Who is He?” We know that He indeed without a doubt is not a “thing”, not a “force”, not a “power” – He is a Somebody. And He is indeed the Gift to every single believer.

11:50

So He says there are two reasons, two primary reasons God the Father sent the Holy Spirit into this life. First of all, He sent the Holy Spirit into your life and mine in order to #1 enable us to do the work God has called us to do….Now let me say right up front, that means that God, through the Holy Spirit Who has gifted you with your personality, your background, your birth and all that God fused into your being even before you were born, and all that He has built into your personality, God, through the Holy Spirit has gifted you. We have different gifts: the gift of service, the gift of giving, exhortation, prophecy, mercy, teaching, all of these gifts – many, many gifts in the Scriptures. And so every single believer has been gifted by the Holy Spirit. Now just the fact that we have been gifted by Him does not make us adequate.

14:33

Now He said to His disciples: “you’re not ready – you can’t do what I’ve called you to do until the Spirit of God has empowered you, has anointed you, has equipped you, and enabled you to do it." So when I think about the fact that Jesus before He began His ministry that there was an anointing of the Spirit upon Him and He said to His disciples: “you’re not ready” even though they had seen Him and watched Him and heard Him and felt Him – they weren’t ready, then who in the world do we think we are to be ready to do the work God that has called us to do apart from the Holy Spirit? Listen, His work in your life and my life is absolutely essential if we’re going to do what God has called us to do and do it well.

16:11

There is no such thing as a non-gifted believer – no such thing. There’s no such thing as a believer who is not indwelt by the Holy Spirit. You may not be filled. You may not be operating out of His strength and power and energy, but you are indwelt by the Spirit of God. That means that you have within you the supernatural power of God to do the work that God has called you to do.

16:49

He designed us to be dependent upon Him….You say: “well, that kind of dependency is weakness.” No. It takes a strong man and strong woman – especially those who are gifted, those who are talented – to rely upon the Holy Spirit….the more gifted, the more skilled you are, the more danger you have to face because it’s real easy to operate out of your own sense of naturalness and abilities and talents apart from the Spirit of God. He said to those men: “do not dare leave the city of Jerusalem until you have been clothed, until the Spirit of God has come upon you in order to enable you to do what you need to do.”

------------------------------------=

Acts 8:14 – 17 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet He was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

What is significant is that the Holy Spirit did not come in any visible way until Peter and John laid hands on the converts. The coming of the Spirit described here may only involve the charismatic gifts, not the indwelling presence of the Spirit already residing in believers. Luke's likely purpose was to simply give the background for Simon's wrongheaded request, not to present a detailed theology of the Holy Spirit.

While the laying on of hands was certainly not the only way the Spirit came, this may have been the normal way spiritual gifts were imparted to others by the apostles (cf. Acts 6:6, 19:6, 2 Timothy 1:6).

4:05

The one thing God hates is pride. And therefore, He's not going to let any of us do it in our own strength. Failure after failure after failure - listen - it's God's avenue to bring you and me to the point of recognizing that the Spirit of God came in order to enable us to live the life we cannot live apart from Him.

5:06

So what does he mean when he says: "I say walk by the Spirit - you'll not carry out the desires of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16)? Here's what that means: to walk by the Spirit - listen - to live by the Spirit, to walk in the Spirit, to be filled with the Spirit means - listen - that we surrender to the prevailing control of the Holy Spirit. To walk in the Spirit means that I am walking surrendered to the prevailing control - that He's the One Who is prevailing in my life. It is His desire - His wisdom - His will - His way - that everything else is surrendered to His prevailing control....This Person of the Spirit Who lives on the inside of us. Who knows perfectly the will and purpose and plan of God for each one of us. Who is there to enable us to walk that way and to will the will of God and to walk in submission to Him. Walking in the prevailing control of the Holy Spirit. And so, we cannot live the christian life any other way.

6:50

We cannot live the christian life apart from the enabling, strengthening power of the Spirit of God. So what does He want from us? He wants us to acknowledge we can't. He wants us to acknowledge our weakness. He wants us to awaken each day realizing that if He doesn't live through us the christian life, we won't be able to do it. And listen, I can tell you trying harder only gets more and more defeat. Because if you and I could try in our own strength, if we could do it in our own strength we would. Then we'd say: "well you know, I'm living the christian life these days and everything's just going fine - I'm doing real well." Most of us - in fact, probably all of us have to get on our face and say: "God. thank You that You said in Your Word: 'by grace you've been saved.' And You said it's by grace that we're kept. You said in Your Word that no matter what goes on in our life that Your grace is greater than all our sins." We are absolutely, totally dependent upon Him.

10:16

And Paul said in Romans chapter 7 - you remember? He said: "what I want to do, I find myself not doing. What I don't want to do, I find myself doing." That's before he came to Romans chapter 8 and talked about his liberty and the strength that he had in the Spirit of God working in and through him. So first of all: He came to enable us to do the work that God has called us to do. Secondly: He came to enable us to live the life that He's called us to live. And it was a freeing moment in my life when I realized He didn't call me to live the christian life but He called me to live surrendered to the Holy Spirit of God Who lives on the inside of me - Who is willing - listen - Who is willing moment by moment - decision by decision to have His way - have His will and to work and to exercise His life through me rather than me trying to conjure it up myself. What a wonderful freeing, moment. That I didn't have to do it - all I had to do is let Him live this life through me.

Because somebody says: "what's a christian?" A christian is a person who has trusted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and one through whom the Holy Spirit is living out the life of Christ.

14:04

If I'm going to live under the prevailing control of the Spirit, then I must be filled with the Holy Spirit. To be filled with the Holy Spirit means that at that moment in my life I am living under His prevailing control. So it requires surrender on my part. Now when somebody says: "what does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?" It means that the Holy Spirit Who lives within you is in control at that moment. "Well how long can I live under the control of the Holy Spirit?" As long as I choose. You see, every time you and I make a decision, that decision determines whether I remain filled or not filled. Because the Spirit of God can't be in control along with me. Either He's in control or I get in control. My flesh - my naturalness naturally wants to be in control. But the Spirit of God desires to be in control. You and I are the ones who make the final determination: will I yield to the Spirit or am I going to do what I want to do?

15:22

First of all, I must look at my life and see if there's any sin there. Because you see, His prevailing control, I have to decide: am I in charge here or is He in charge? So first of all there is repentance of all known sin. As long as I hold any aspect of my life for myself, for me, in spite of anything else, then He is not in control. What does that require? Repentance of my sin. Asking the Holy Spirit to fill me. And believing that He does. He says: "this is the confidence that I have in Him, that if I ask anything according to His will, He hears me. And if I know that He hears me I know that I have the petitions that I desire of Him (1 John 5:14,15). I know one thing for certain: It's His will to fill every single one of us to be filled with His Spirit and to live under His control.

17:18

I'm here to tell you that the Spirit of God will zero in in your life in a loving way. And what will He do? He'll sift and sand and cleanse till He can get you absolutely surrendered to Him and then you'll taste of life - listen - you'll get a taste of something you have never have tasted of before and this world can't match it.

intouch.org radio 2/27/14 (verbatim, edited quotes)

9:24

When he says: "walk by the Spirit". That means: that I am to walk, that you are to walk in such a fashion that we are being led by, guided by, enabled by, overshadowed by One Who is empowering us, One Who is strengthening us. That is, we have Someone on the inside Who will enable us to do what you and I can't do. And I can remember approximately the time when it first hit me that God never intended for me to live the christian life.

I mean I grew up struggling, believing that was my job. And so, that was my task in life to live the christian life. Well, the truth is: you and I can't do it. There's no way that you or I can live the christian life in our own strength.

So, when he says here, in this very important word: "I say walk by the Spirit" (that is: enabled by Him, strengthened by Him, given knowledge by Him, upheld by Him, led, directed by Him). It is the work of the Holy Spirit. A christian is one in whom the Holy Spirit is dwelling and through whom the Holy Spirit is living out the life of Christ. Because it is not in our efforts. If it were, He would not have had to come. If it were true then the Holy Spirit would not have had to come but He's here because you and I are absolutely helpless to live this life....

There's a mistake I think that people make (and all of us can get out of balance in any area of our life). You've heard people say: "well, just let go and let God"....Well, what does that mean? Well, I can tell you what that does not mean. It does not mean that I can just trust Jesus as my personal Savior and then just sit and watch Him do it. Now the Spirit of God is the One Who works in our lives and lives through us.

But you and I cannot be passive and live a godly life. Now the reason I know that is because we live in a world where we are continually in combat, we're continually under attack. We're continually being tempted and tried and tested in all ways.

Listen, you can't live a passive life and be a believer. A believer's life is an active life. He talks about walking by the Spirit. Walking in the light. Walking in love. So, we're talking about conflict, we're talking about battle. And so, when you and I think about the christian life, we say: "well, it's the life of Christ within us". It certainly is. And: "so, all we have to do is trust Him". That's true.

But, if we get the idea that it's just a passive something: "you know, I'm just going to let Him do it all". Well, I understand what people mean by that but we can get out of balance because I do have a personal responsibility when it comes to living the christian life. So we can't be passive.....

It's trusting but I have a personal responsibility to deal with the issues of sin as they arise.....Putting on the Lord Jesus Christ means that I am simply to do what? Not only have I received Him as my personal Savior but I by faith acknowledge to allow Him to live His life in me.

That is a decision that you and I make. It isn't a decision you and I make once in our lives. It is a decision you and I make daily....While it is the Spirit of God living within us, we have a personal responsibility to trust Him. We have a personal responsibility when we meet sin face to face. We have a personal responsibility when we're tempted, when we're tried, when we're tested...That's why he says we are to endure.

Listen, endurance is everything but being passive....that means we take personal responsibility to stand against trials, stand against sin, stand in the midst of difficulty - not give up, don't quit, don't turn around, don't back off - that takes personal responsibility on our part. Is it our strength? No. It is the strength of the Spirit but it is the decision of the believer to face and deal with these things.

-----

2/28/14 (verbatim portion of a message)

15:25

Our responsibility is to set our mind on the Spirit. In order to submit ourselves to Him - to walk in Him. In order that He can produce through us, live through us, what? Such character that we will be known as people of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control....

When he says that you and I have crucified the flesh, here's what it means: when you and I trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we chose to give ourselves to Him, He gave Himself to us in the Person of the Holy Spirit. What we did is we turned our backs on our past lives - that's what repentance is all about....not only have I confessed my sin but it is a change of attitude and change of direction.....

Not only have we crucified the flesh in our position – that is: God placed us in this position with Him that we are His sons and daughters and made righteous by His Blood. But you know what? Every single day I have to make a decision: if my flesh is crucified, that is, if I acknowledge, if I confess, if I am commited to its death, I am going to live obediently before God. I am going to do the right thing... making decisions whereby we starve our craving flesh…because it does not fit who we are...I can make a choice to live in carnality or flesh/humanness.…or to live dead to this humanness I have...that crucifixion is my responsibility. I can't say: "well, you know, back yonder somewhere I got saved and I was crucified with Christ and that was the end of it". No, it's not either... You and I have a personal responsibility….We either choose death to our humanness or we choose life to it….it's something we have to do on an ongoing basis…….”Walk in the Spirit”, that is: Allow the Holy Spirit to enable you and to strengthen you and what’ll happen is He’ll live through you love, joy, peace and so forth… The conflict’s on the inside of you – it’ll never cease. It’s war….You and I have the awesome privilege of living in victory through the indwelling presence and overwhelming sense of abundant power of the Holy Spirit.

When God’s Spirit Is in Charge

In Touch magazine

A Spirit-filled life does not mean one that is problem-free. Christians who are under the control of the Holy Spirit will still make mistakes, have difficulties, and fall into sin. But there are two definite characteristics that distinguish Spirit-filled followers of Christ from other Christians and from unbelievers.

First, they are not controlled by their circumstances, and second, they refocus quickly after having sinned.

When the Holy Spirit is in charge, our attitude will not be determined by what’s going on around us. In other words, life doesn’t have to be stress-free in order for us to know peace—our spiritual joy won’t diminish even if we should meet with disappointment.

Anyone can be loving, kind, and self-controlled in seasons of blessing. But what happens to our attitude in trying times? The real test of who we are occurs not when things are going our way but when misfortune shows up. If the Spirit is in charge, we will learn to do four things: to love when we want to hate; to practice kindness when we are accused; to respond gently when others are harsh; and to have self-control when temptation strikes hard.

None of us will do all of this perfectly because there is still “self” within us. But when we sin, we will respond quickly to the Spirit’s prompting. He won’t have to work hard to get our attention, because we are under His authority. We will recognize our wrong action, confess it, and refocus on God’s ways.

-------------------------------------

1 John 1:9,10 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His Word has no place in our hearts.

21:40

To walk in the Spirit is to obey the initial promptings of the Spirit. Which means: to do what He says, when He says it without having to say it over and over again. That is, the initial promptings means simply this: that when He gives us guidance, when He tells us something to do, we should do it right then.

So when it comes to making decisions, here's what you can rest in: the Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit was given to us as a Helper. That's what Jesus called Him. He's also there to give us guidance in those big and small decisions in life. Not only that, He's there to help us discern what is the difference between what's good and what's best. What is the will of the Father versus what do I want to do.

To help us to discern what other people are saying, for example, when they want to give us their opinion. The Holy Spirit is the One Who enables us to be able to fully understand what God is really saying to us.

Likewise He's our Comforter. We get into those situations or hurt or pain, He's there to comfort us and how does He do that? He does that by taking us back to the Word and reminding us of what the Word says about a particular situation. God's full of comfort.

The Scripture says also in this 14th chapter of John that He's our Teacher. He also says that one of His responsibilities is to convict us of sin. And to convict us of righteousness and judgment - that is, He's the One Who enables us, that is, He empowers us. He strengthens us. He equips us to do those things that we need to do.

He's the one Who determines the spiritual gifts that you and I have to live out our lives and to serve the Lord. What an awesome gift is the Holy Spirit. An awesome gift from God to enable you and me to be the persons God wants us to be.

5:37

And the evidence of the filling of the Spirit is not feeling – we are filled with the Holy Spirit by faith.

8:55

Feeling, my friend, will trip you up. If you live on emotion, you can spend your life trying to get some feeling and never know whether you’ve been filled with the Spirit or not. If your life is cleansed before God and you’re totally yielded to Him and you’ve prayed to ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and you accept 1 John 5 verse 13 and 14, then you can walk out here tonight knowing that you’ve been filled.

13:28

Look in Galatians chapter 5:22, when Paul was describing here evidence of the fullness of the Spirit – here’s what he said: when He has undivided possession, control and use – verse 22 – “but the fruit of the Spirit”, that is the overflow of the Spirit when He has undivided control, undivided possession, and undivided use – what’s going to flow from you? “Love, joy” – let’s say it together – “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” – that’s the fruit of the Spirit.

So when somebody says: “well, are you filled with the Spirit?” I’ll tell you what to do. All you have to do is go get your Bible. You don’t have to say: “well, I think I am.” Just go get your Bible and read this passage and see if your life, in Galatians chapter 5 and Ephesians chapter 5, just see if your present character, conduct and conversation are anything similar to those two passages of Scripture.

Now here’s the big question….: “how long can I live filled?” That’s real simple: as long as you’re willing to allow Him to have undivided possession, undivided control and undivided use. You say: “well, how long is that?” I’ll tell you how long it is: when you have to make the next decision in your life to obey or disobey God, at that moment you either reaffirm your fullness or lose it.

16:20

Listen, He knows we’re going to blow it at times….God knows we’re not perfect. We’re going to make mistakes. Sometimes we aren’t just going to make a mistake - we’re going to willfully sin and we’re going to have to willfully repent of it right there. But you don’t get down in the dumps and say: “oh…how long is it going to take me to be refilled?” Just as quickly as you’re willing to say and confess, repent and what? reaffirm His possession, control and use of your life.

Now you can be saved and go to Heaven and never be filled with the Spirit but I want to tell you you’ll struggle every step of the way. You’ll miss out on so much because, let me tell you something, you will not get hungry for God. You won’t have a deep yearning to know Him. You won’t have an insatiable desire to know the living God and live in sin. The folks who have those desires are people who are walking in the Spirit. It’s a daily walk. It’s a continuous walk. It’s a continuous believing and receiving – we have to yield.
