Good News!

By Dr. Charles Stanley

In Mark 16:15, Jesus commanded His disciples to "go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” But what exactly is the gospel? Even believers can’t always give a clear definition for this word. Let’s take a closer look at what this biblical term means.

1. The gospel is good news.

The word for “gospel” in Greek originally meant “reward for doing good.” Eventually it came to mean “good news.”

2. The gospel also has some bad news.

In order for the gospel to be good news, each person must first realize that there was bad news. The problem is that without Christ, each of us is hopelessly headed for eternal separation from God.

3. The gospel expresses God’s grace.

4. The gospel is for everyone.

God desires that all people accept the free gift of eternal life (John 3:16; 1 Tim. 2:3-4).

How do people learn of God’s offer for eternal life? The Lord uses believers to share the gospel with others through relationships, local outreaches to the poor, missions support, or service abroad. Opportunities to spread the good news are limitless.

5. The gospel is unique.

In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” A popular idea today is that every road leads to God. By this, people mean all religions are equally valid paths to heaven. But Jesus boldly proclaimed that He is the only way to the Father.

Closing: The Father, in His infinite wisdom, has only one requirement for salvation—that we place faith in His Son. In terms of eternal life, it makes no difference how virtuous or sinful a person has been. Humanity’s helpless, hopeless condition has only one answer: trusting in Jesus Christ and His atoning death on the cross.

Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Your Son to die so that I could be forgiven of all my sins. Please empower me to share this good news with my family, neighbors, and friends, both near and far. I surrender my will to be used by You, and I look forward to the work You will accomplish through me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Created to Love

By Charles F. Stanley

Have you ever wondered if your life has a purpose? The Word of God says it does—one that is both noble and desirable: Every believer was created by God to love and be loved.

God loves you personally and individually, without limit or qualification. He desires to shower you with His affection and kindness. Let me assure you of several things:

God's love is the most important thing we can know about Him.

The very essence of God's Being—in other words, His personality and nature—is love (1 John 4:8). It is the reason Jesus came to earth, lived a victorious life, and then died to restore man's relationship with the Father (John 3:16). The most important decision we can ever make is to receive this gift of God.

The Lord's affection is absolute, unwavering, and sacrificial. Moreover, God's love is not subject to favoritism. He cares for the sinner as much as He does for the saint. In our human pride or our desire to be "somebody special," we may find that fact difficult to swallow. But God grants love to each person.

The Bible tells us that the rain falls on the just and the unjust, and the sun shines on the righteous and the wicked (Matt. 5:45). This means that with or without faith in God, everyone experiences certain benefits and blessings from Him. But the person who receives Jesus as Savior is in a position to reap the blessings that accompany an outpouring of love into his or her life.

The Lord's love is not based upon what we do, what we have, or what we achieve. He freely gives it to us simply because we are His creation. You cannot win or earn more of God's favor—it has nothing to do with performance. Accept and delight in that truth.

The most important response we can make is to reciprocate God's love.

John said it simply and eloquently: "We love Him because He first loved us" (1 John 4:19, NKJV). And Jesus said the first and foremost commandment was this: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind" (Matt. 22:37). The only acceptable response to God's great outpouring of love toward you is to love Him back.

We can choose to rebel. And while this doesn't affect God’s nature, it will change us. Those who refuse to acknowledge and receive divine love cut themselves off from great blessing. Not only that, but such individuals typically yield to anger, hatred, and bitterness. To harden one’s heart toward God is the supreme act of rebellion—in doing so, a person hurts himself far more than he hurts others. Humbly receiving God, on the other hand, brings good into one's life.

satan constantly tries to convince us that if we follow Jesus, we will have to give up personal freedom, identity, and pleasure. But those who live apart from God's love inevitably discover their rebellion did not make them any freer. They may not go to jail, but they end up in emotional or psychological prisons—caught in addiction or trapped by feelings of resentment. The longer they live separated from the Lord's love and mercy, the less pleasure they find in life. In that situation, it is easy to become cynical, jaded, critical, and in the end, apathetic to nearly everything.

But those who embrace and reciprocate God's love enjoy inner freedom they never imagined. They develop as individuals, discovering hidden talents and abilities. They experience true delight in God's creation and know the joy of perpetual discovery.

When we choose to love and obey God, we can be sure He will guide us toward doing what will bring about the greatest fulfillment in life.

God's love is our ultimate reason to hope.

If we know with certainty that God loves us and desires good for our lives, what is there to fear? Hope in Christ is for everyone. It compels us not to remain in a state of dread, doubt, or worry but to seek transformation by the Holy Spirit's power. Trust encourages us to anticipate God's best and look for the dawning of a new day.

Our Heavenly Father is generous—even extravagant—in His love. Open your heart and let the Lord shower more of His good gifts upon you. You won't regret yielding your life to Him

Our God of Grace

Read Ephesians 2:4-5

Grace is God’s favor and love shown to mankind. We cannot earn it or ever be good enough to deserve it. To truly appreciate His grace, we need to comprehend certain truths about Him and ourselves.

First, God is absolutely holy, and sin cannot coexist with the sacred perfection of His presence. When Adam and Eve chose to eat from the forbidden tree, their intimate relationship with Him was broken. Since all future generations inherited their sinful nature, every person is born with a nature bent away from the Lord.

Next, God’s character is just. As a result, He requires payment for sin. The penalty He demands is death (Rom. 6:23), not just physically but also spiritually through eternal separation from Him.

Finally, we have a merciful God who does not treat us as our actions deserve but instead extends His grace toward us. He devised a plan that would affirm His holy nature, meet the requirements of His justice, and enable us to become members of His family: He sent His Son to accomplish our salvation.

Born as a human being, Jesus lived a perfect life and fulfilled the Law. He alone was qualified to satisfy divine justice. Christ took our place, bore our sins, and experienced God’s wrath over our rebellion—all so that we could be reconciled to the Father. God made this provision for our salvation while we were still sinners (Rom. 5:8).

Have you acknowledged your sinful state and received His forgiveness through faith in Jesus? If so, are you expressing ongoing thankfulness for His grace?

Not many people can say that on the day they accepted Christ, someone explained how to grow spiritually. Sadly, some believers aren’t ever taught. God wants His children to bear the image of Christ, but we do not grow in our faith unless we take action.

First, we are responsible for renewing our mind (Rom. 12:2). Though God saves us and gives us a new spirit, He does not give us a new brain. Our minds have many trenches that have been dug or worn by rebellion, self-focus, or habit. That is why it’s important to meditate on the Bible, which expresses the thoughts of God. Meditation is more than reading—it involves thinking about what the words mean and then applying truth. There’s no way to grow spiritually without absorbing Scripture into our thinking.

A second step toward Christian maturity is being ready to admit and assume responsibility for failure. When we deny our sins, we delay spiritual growth, but as we learn to confess wrongdoing, the opposite happens—growth is inevitable.

The third step naturally follows the second: after confession should come repentance. This is more than a mere acknowledgement of wrongdoing or a promise to try harder. Repentance means that we commit to make an about-face and head in the opposite direction from our sin.

Our Father’s goal is for all believers to continually make progress toward Christlikeness. With these steps, you’ll develop in that direction. And the most important consequence is that your relationship with God will deepen.

----------

The Next Steps to Growth. Charles Stanley

Read | Ephesians 4:14-16

Yesterday’s devotion covered three steps to Christian growth: renewing our minds through Bible reading, confessing sin, and repenting of that sin. Today we will look at three more factors that will build us spiritually.

Any believer—whether mature or new to the faith—would be wise to receive godly counsel. I have seen some great men and women take a terrible plunge away from God because they were too proud to admit weakness. The Lord sees us as we truly are; we lack the ability to view ourselves objectively, which is why it’s important to have a friend who will be completely honest about our faults and mistakes. A godly counselor won’t be critical or condemning but rather will prove to be loving and kind.

We also grow spiritually when we serve God by serving others. At times this may mean ministering to someone who tends to bring out our worst qualities. Getting involved in his or her life, though, can help us learn patience, acceptance, and love.

One additional step is to respond properly to pain and difficulty. We all wish our greatest growth came during the calm times of our life. But the truth is, we make the most spiritual progress when we face adversity. Focusing on the Lord instead of on the source of our heartache is the appropriate response.

So the question is, Do you really want to move ahead in your Christian walk? To do so requires time, attention, and commitment. But if you choose to journey down God’s pathway to growth, you can expect to become more like Christ every day

-----------

Mark 8:22 - 26 And He cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto Him, and besought Him to touch him. And He took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when He had spit on his eyes, and put His hands upon him, He asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that He put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. And He sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

Bishop TD Jakes taught in his sermon from December 2015 "The Whole world blind," Jesus Christ first touched the blind man to lead the blind man out of the bad environment of Bethsaida, yet this first touch of leading the blind man out by the hand didn't change the blind man's condition - so the process of "becoming whole" takes more than one touch from Jesus Christ. The blind man had to be honest and admit to Jesus Christ that the first time Jesus Christ put His hands on the man's eyes, the man was not completely healed from blindness.

This doctrine probably will cause some to say the "instantaneous process" of salvation described in 2 Corinthians 5:17 is being disputed, but this could simply be a confirmation of the assertion that C.H. Mackintosh made in the "Notes on Numbers" book that a christian might not be "fully emancipated" and "not possessing victory" after being saved. So this "healing process" might be a "growth"/"becoming whole" process and not necessarily describing the salvation process exclusively.

Person to Person: The Gospel of Mark

by Paul V. Vickers

(summarized points of the text)

p 125 – 126

(Mark 8:22 - 26)

We can see truth a little when Jesus Christ saves us, but then we must choose love and compassion to truly see.

p 227

We must choose to make ourselves ready for the Heavenly Father to feed us with new life.

p 228

Jesus Christ will allow us to see our judas-like ways so we can choose to be virtuous eventually.

p 235

We need to watch and pray for truly virtuous spiritual motives all the while diligently.

The New you II- part 1

8:29

Notice in these new garments not only is the motivation who we are in Christ, but you and I have a responsibility. Look at the terminology he uses here because he used it earlier in this passage – he says: “now so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on” – now when he says “put on” that means: I have a responsibility. That does not mean that you and I in our energy and our strength and in our power to do so we are to make these changes in our life. No. Remember that a person who has received the Lord Jesus Christ is indwelt by the Person of Jesus Christ through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit so that a believer is one who has Christ life living within us. That’s what’s made us new. Not something He patched up – I’ll repeat it again – not something He patched up. Replacing the old life with the new life which is Christ living within us………the christian life is not something we do, it is something that is expressed through us: the life of Jesus. So when he says “put on”, he’s saying: you do have the responsibility of allowing by faith the Holy Spirit to express through you these qualities which are so characteristic of the life of Christ Himself….These are the expressions of the life of Christ, it is the work of the Holy Spirit expressing them through us, but we must take the initiative now to be sure that they’re expressed in our life.

(Colossians 3:12 - 15 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.)

"In the christian life, there's some folks you have to put up with....They're not always going to be kind and gentle and loving - we're going to have to put up with some folks."

Morning Connection affirmation program

To follow up appropriately on the previous Charles Stanley teaching that "we must take the initiative now to be sure that they’re expressed in our life", I now make a strong suggestion that a christian must regularly every morning engage in a practice before even getting out of bed called "Morning connection affirmations." The first kind of morning connection affirmations are described by Charles Stanley as follows:

intouch.org radio 1/6/14

22:20

The wisest thing you can do is to make a decision: “From this point on here’s how I’m going to begin my day: I’m going to connect before I get out of bed. Lord, I thank You that You have a plan for my life today. I thank You Lord that Your timing is perfect. I thank You that You’ll bring into my life whatever You need to bring. You’ll protect me, You’ll guide me, You’ll lead me. If I go through any kind of suffering and hurt and disappointment and all the rest, I’ll trust You to bring me through that. Lord, I want to thank You that today, I’m going to walk obediently before You. I’m going to trust the Holy Spirit to do the speaking in me – to give me guidance and direction. And give me Your timing. Whatever You have for me, I’m available to wait. I know that waiting will grow me up, strengthen me, prepare me for what You have. I want to thank You for this day and Lord let my life be fruitful all day long”.

----------------=

intouch.org radio 12/18/13

21:48

And so, when you think about the kind of life that you live, do you get up everyday saying? “well, do the best I can today. I know I’m going to sin because, you know, after all, saved by grace – we’re still sinners”. Is that your attitude?

Or should it not be? “thank God He saved me and the Holy Spirit is living on the inside of me. And Father today, by Your help and Your strength, and Your divine guidance, I’m going to walk holy before You. I’m going to be obedient to You today. I choose to live a sanctified life. And therefore, I’m trusting the Holy Spirit to guide what I say, guide where I go, guide what I touch, guide what I think, guide what I feel. I want to walk holy before You today".

Once you’re saved, the christian life is meant to be a journey that matures you into the likeness of Christ.

--------------=

intouch.org radio 12/12/13

16:50

Listen, I want to challenge you that before you get up tomorrow morning, while you’re still in the bed, you put it in your own words but say something like this, out of your heart: “Father, I just want to thank You today that You are going to pursue me today to pour out Your goodness in my life. You said: 'surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, pursue me, come after me, all the days of my life'. So Father, thank You that today, that You are going to be looking for ways and You’ll be looking for opportunities and You’ll know them all already – You’ll be looking for ways to express Your goodness to me today. Father, I want to walk in Your will today. And I want to be able to identify those expressions of Your goodness so that tonight I can just spend my time praising You and thanking You before I go to bed – thanking You for all the expressions of Your goodness because I know, today, I’m going to live and walk under the canopy of Your goodness all day long".

------------------=

intouch.org radio 3/28/16

21:59

This is one of the wisest things you can do to keep from drifting. When you wake up in the morning, before you get out of bed, you say to Him: "Father today" or "Lord Jesus today here and now I surrender my entire life to You for this day." Then when something comes along, the Spirit of God is going to remind you "(no, no) that's not surrender - you're having your way now."

When you make a genuine commitment - "I surrender my entire life to You today" - it's amazing the impact. You know what it's like? It's like God gave you this radar system and it reaches way out there, you can see it coming down the track. And God reminds you: "remember, you laid all that down and you surrendered everything to Me today."

Now we have to stay on guard - you have to be on guard.

Foundations for the Christian Life

Joshua 1:1-9

I personally believe that every morning when we roll out of bed, we should spend a little time on our knees. We ought to entrust each day to our Heavenly Father, going over our schedule and committing the time to Him. The morning is like the rudder of our day — how we begin steers our course throughout. Are you ready to let God be your captain?

God's love is so strong, available, and stabilizing that we can confidently step into each day knowing that the good things are gifts from His hand and the challenges can be faced in His strength. For all of life, His love is what matters most.

God's love stands when all else has fallen

----------------------------=

After a christian says those types of morning affirmations before getting out of bed in the morning, then a christian should say "putting on the armor of God" by faith (Ephesians 6:10 - 18) affirmations before getting out of bed in the morning:

Right now by faith I put on the whole armor of the Heavenly Father so I can stand against the wiles of the evil one and so that I can stand in the evil day.

Right now by faith my loins are girded by the truth so I am established by the truth

Right now by faith I put on the breastplate of righteousness so that my heart is protected

Right now by faith my feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace so wherever I'm walking, I'm walking in true victory

Right now by faith I take up the shield of faith so with the shield of faith I can quench the fiery attacks of the evil one

Right now by faith I put on the helmet of salvation so my mind is protected. So my mind is full of peace (Philippians 4:6,7) so that my mind is full of joy. For the joy of Jesus Christ truly is my strength (Nehemiah 8:10)

Right now by faith I wield the Sword of the Spirit, the Holy Word of the Heavenly Father, so I can defeat the evil one the way my Savior Jesus Christ defeated the evil one in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1 - 11)
Right now by faith I put on the whole armor of God so that I will have the grace to be grounded to keep all of my territory secure from the attacks from the evil one.
So right now by faith I put on the whole armor of the Heavenly Father so I can be a strong soldier for my Savior Jesus Christ who truly perseveres in prayer always and who truly endures (2 Timothy 2:3).

(these, like the earlier morning connection affirmations, can be said in ways that are more suitable for you - they don't have to be worded or phrased exactly in this manner)

------------

Romans 12:1,2 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

In Touch Magazine 1/16 "Let God change your mind" by Amy Simpson

p 57

Romans 12:2 is a commonly quoted verse, but we often focus only on not being shaped by the world but utterly transformed. We haven't given enough attention to this transformation happening through a renewal of our minds. It's not merely a soul or heart change. As the New Living Translation says, it's a matter of letting God "transform you into a new person by changing the way you think."

------------------------=

Then, there should be also spoken a series of morning connection affirmations that are directed at preparing effectively for upright thinking and behaving for that particular day. These should be based on the Holy Word of truth because, as detailed in the Charles Stanley teaching in Teachings 7, the Word should be the main help when facing temptation. Creflo Dollar also describes in "Contend for your mind" part 2 that "we have to know enough of the Word to cast that thought down" These particular affirmations should be saved on your cell phone memo notes and/or in a small notepad for continual review as many times as is helpful throughout a given day:

Philippians 4:13/1 John 4:4 Morning connection affirmations

Today I will think in ways that will keep me in tune with the well of living water springing up within me (John 4:13,14) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will keep me in tune with the rivers of living water that flow out of my belly (John 7:37,38) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will cause me to be strongly rooted in love (Ephesians 3:17) and for love to truly be expressed through me in many powerful ways because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will keep the big picture in mind and think and make choices and decisions guided by my convictions about the way Jesus would have me think and make choices and decisions and not my personal preferences because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that allow grace to ground me so I can stand and keep my mental, emotional and entire life territory protected from the evil one because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will increase my passion for Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:8 - 15) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will keep my mind on things that are pure and lovely and that have virtue (Philippians 4:8) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will cause the praise that I give the Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ today to be genuine (Psalms 104:34) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will cause true joy to spring up within me (Philippians 4:4) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will cause true peace to guard my heart and mind (Philippians 4:7) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will make me more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that truly show that faith has given me true victory (1 John 5:4) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that build up wisdom and discipline and self-control within me (Ephesians 5:15,16, Proverbs 16:32, Proverbs 16:21, James 1:19, Galatians 5:22 - 26) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will think in ways that will lead to prosperity and plenteousness (Proverbs 21:5) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will quickly turn away from unwise thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5 - these could be the kind of thoughts that are giving you problems - angry, lustful, negative, fearful, covetous, bitter, depressed, worrying, defeated, pessimistic, etc.) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Today I will avoid unwise behavior (any type of behavior that is giving you problems presently) because I can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens me and greater is the Holy Spirit Who is in me than the evil one which is in the world

Whenever you stumble, improve the morning connection affirmations to suit the new issues that are causing the stumbles. Always make continual adjustments.

intouch.org radio 2/7/17 When it’s spiritual warfare, part 2

(summarized points of a message)

If you find yourself often saying “I don’t know why I keep doing this” and/or “I don’t know why I keep thinking of this,” then the evil one has established strongholds in your life.

Continually thinking on wrong things can allow roots of bad strongholds to take hold and produce more and more consequences.

Steps to get victory over strongholds (root out strongholds):

1. Acknowledge the fact that you are in warfare

2. Identify the strongholds

3. Root out the wrong thinking: 2 Corinthians 10:4,5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down wrong reasonings, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

4. Trace the stronghold back to the source (you don’t always have to do this)

5. Go to the Heavenly Father in prayer. Find Scriptures that deal with the strongholds.

6. Pray and speak victory using the weapon of the Name of Jesus Christ

7. Pray and speak victory pleading the Blood of Jesus Christ

8. Pray and move forward utilizing the power of the Holy Spirit

9. Have faith that the Heavenly Father will help you have victory when you fight using those powerful weapons

10. Be vigilant about making sure that you use Scriptures to effectively heal after you get victory. Meditate regularly on helpful Scriptures to maintain the victory.
