In August 1973 the National Youth Orchestra of Wales joined the Uganda for a cruise to Oslo, Hamburg, Antwerp, Brussels and Le Havre (for Paris). Concerts were given at every port. In spite of the logistical difficulties of rehearsing on board ship and getting the orchestra and their instruments on and off the ship the trip was a great success. The ship's company were most supportive of the venture and were rewarded with a concert in a church at Montipellier on the last night of the cruise. The programme included Sibelius Second Symphony and the soloist in Marcello's Oboe Concerto was a youthful John Anderson, currently principal oboe with ECO. The conductor was Arthur Davison and the trip was led by B.J.Griffiths of the WJEC. I was a young member of House Staff accompanying the orchestra.
