I kneels down behind the struggling mare and when the contraction fades, I stick my glove clad arm into the womb, trying to find the foal. "His leg is bent," I say, pulling out my arm. "I'll need to straighten it or he could tear the placenta before he even gets out. Grab her head and hold her still. Talk calmly." I work deftly, and struggle for almost forty five minutes, tyring to straighten the foals leg. When I finally get it straightened, I don't sit back to relax. The contractions are still coming strongly and the water has just broken. Another half an hour passes before we even suspect anything is going to happen. Finally, I see a foals front feet emerging, then the little nose, then the whole head, and then the shoulders. Another contractions rocks the mare and the foal comes out in a rush of fluid. The mare lies her head down and breaths a soft sigh, but she knows she's not done. I check over the baby, working his legs, taking out the milt of his mouth, and making sure he can breathe. Finally, the last contraction goes through the dam and she cleans. I push the after birth out of the way and check the foal's gender. "I hope you wanted a filly...that's what you got!!" I stand up and let the mare look over her filly.
