On the webpage of the New Zealand Cactus & Succulent Soc. you will find with a little effort a really excellent article regarding the possible (even probable) evolution of cacti. This really is far too large and involved a subject for short answers. Use links from the NSW C&S Soc above that will take you to the Cactus Mall and then to the NZ C&S webpage.
