As an example, I have a number of Stapelia leendertziae in pots. Some are in a pergola getting 50-60% shade, wind, only afternoon light. They only rarely get any water from me - just natures own. They seem to be flowering and growing quite fine.

Another couple of pots are in my cactus house which gets about 10% shade, but very high temperatures due to lack of airflow. I water once a week. These plants have a slight yellow/red tinge to them, but also grow and flower profusely.

I have seen this plant and gigantea grown out in the full sun and flowering OK. I think that these types with the "fur" on them, might just be fairly hardy.
