Subject: Online testing

Well, I have learned a few things about online testing. First, the Internet is not the most stable vehicle to give tests. I have tried it this semester, summer, and it has worked very well for the two students I let take tests this way. But, it is very slow and one student's third test did not come through in completed form. So she had to retake the test. Also, there have been days that I have not been able to retrieve their scores from the company's server.

What will work consistently, however, is to let students take tests on the school's lab computers. The testing program is installed on the computer and all information stays on our own server. This, I am told, is a very reliable way of giving online tests. I may offer tests via the Internet in special cases but not as a general testing method.

I have spent about three to four hours on each test writing in an explanation of each answer. When the student is done, the tests are timed for 50 minutes, they receive their score, they know which questions they missed, and a complete explanation of each answer. This will be a big help to them when they take the next test. This also means that they do not have to come to my office to get an explanation of the test. Although, I will still do this for those student's who want to come by.

I am ready to give all of my IDL (independent learning) students tests this way in the fall. The built in statistics that the program gives me should prove valuable.
