According to my Macquarie Dictionary, it is supposed to relate to the old French (before 1400). Pon meaning shirt or something like that.

However, I favour the latin explanation. (I would say that wouldn't I?) "Patinum" meaning clothes or cloth. People used to quite lierally, pawn their clothes.
