A would-be Miss Universe from Sherwood Park stands small but thinks big.
Alysha Clark, a five-foot-four 18-year-old, will strut the catwalk alongside girls as old as 27 - and some over six-feet - when she competes to be Miss Universe Canada this May.
She readily admits she doesn't fit the model mould - which she calls unrealistic - but that's the way she said she likes it.
"I have a chance to change the standard viewpoint of beauty," she said. "You see so many different kinds of beauty ... I don't just think it should be five-foot-11 and 100 pounds," she said.
This is Clark's first shot at pageant glory.
It's been a rude welcome - dieting and working out even after she was picked in February to go to the Toronto competition.
She's now getting accustomed to walking with a bowl on her head to pick up proper walking form.
"Everyone thinks it's so easy, but you have to slant your back backward (while walking), and being short, I have to take long steps with my little legs," she said.
But the challenge isn't all about working her body.
In her first audition interview, evaluators asked her to take and explain stances on current issues, including abortion and capital punishment.
"I did not expect that, so I just told them what I think, and I'm pretty concrete in my beliefs," said Clark.
She studies at MacEwan, and is looking at taking two degrees, possibly in psychology or languages.
She's also a singer and songwriter.
She'll fly to Toronto May 9 for the national competition, one of 14 from Alberta competing against 63 women in total, she said.
Following bikini and cocktail dress segments - and maybe some musical performances - she'll find out May 16 if she won.
She's hoping for a shortcut to the final 20 by winning the most votes online for the people's choice category. To cast your vote, go to www.beautiesofcanada.com

This isnt meant to be mean to the girl but wow....BoC just stole her money. Does anyone think she stands a cahnce of winniing the title knowing full well that no way in hell BoC will send a 5'4" delegate to Miss Universe? Its shameful that they are misleading her into thinking she stands a chance (based solely on her height) (NT)Christi21:54:48 04/01/09 Wed
agreed no chance at all. She was ripped off. Or she's going to need those giant platforms (NT)Patricia00:43:02 04/02/09 Thu
yeah but who wants to spend over 2000$ for just a experience. go on a trip or something. there must be something in her heart that says she can or wants to win...and this is her first pageant ever, so she doesn't really know. (NT)patricia16:39:34 04/02/09 Thu
