i dunno...ever been to a dance competion? skating competition? there are costumes, make-up, stage parents coaching from the sidelines. Where there is competition there are people who take it to the extremes for thier kids to win. OBVIOUSLY the baby categories are for the parents benefit, but I think at about 3 or 4 they can make thier own choices. I dont think that I would personally give my kid fake teeth, but if thats the difference between winning and not standing a chance, you do what u can or you dont enter that level of competition. Spray tans...probably a bit over the line but at least they arent putting thier kids in tanning beds!!!!
I am a firm supporter of putting kids into events they want to be in, not one you want to be in...and making them make a commitment to the sport/event.
I am also a firm believer that these types of events do help kids not to be shy later on, gives them confidence and self-esteem. I am not huge on the glitz style pageants but I would have the option not to participate in them with my kids, and go for moore of a natural pageant.
I did put my 4 year old child in a 'kiddie' pageant, some people weree over the top, some were just there for fun, I only recall one 'stage mom' who was an absolute bitch to her kid (but I also remember at a skating competition wheen I wa 10 a bitchh dragging her kid down the hallway because she didnt place in the top 4 so ya bitches are not isolated to pageant moms).
My child had a blast at that pageant, performed amazingly and is now aspiring to enter a theatre arts program. Did thiis taste of stage assist with the confidence needed foor stage? I think it did, there has always been an unblievable comfort level on stage for my kid, I credit a lot to pageants. My kid also performed at a lot of local pageants as the 'entertainment'.
I learned a lot about the kiddie pageants tho, and no, they aren't judged fairly. If they are run by someone who owns a model/talent school, those are the kids who are going to win, time and time again. If they have to sell ads, the ones who sell the most ads, win.
And no Im not a sore loser, my kid has an unbelievable collection of crowns, sashes and trophies...I was just very observant at these events LOL
I let my kids compete until they pulled the plug on it.

its funny if you notice that every mother in toddlers and tiaras and overweight. and omg the money they spend on a child for just the dress (2000) outweights the money that you can win. (NT)patricia21:39:35 03/12/09 Thu
