Ms. Curious... I was confused as to which spoiler you are referring to: the AngelX spoilers or the spoiler that was posted on Fanforum cited above.
To be totally honest, I agree with you. I do not really want Spike to become William, nor do I want, God forbid, for him to get a "replacement" soul. In fact, I am not even sure I want him to get a "soul" (in the manner of Angel) at all. What I want and what you are expressing seems to be one in the same.
I would like Spike to go on his journey, because I think if he remains in the cycle that he is in, he becomes stagnant. I, personally want him de-chipped. And I want him to be faced with a choice. Not William or himself. Not even good or evil, but a choice of how to act. My ultimate outcome, as a Spike fan and a B/S shipper is that he gets the chip out, battles himself and realizes that his conscience, his love IS his soul and his moral compass. He is still Spike, but Spike chosing to be what the chip forced upon him. Still a fighter, still a lover. Not one or the other.
And in my little eutopia, Buffy ultimately accepts and respects this journey, and makes a choice for herself. In my hopeful world, I hope she choses Spike.
