Actually, I like them. A lot.
I think it makes a lot of sense, for a lot of reasons. Among other things, it enables Spike to demonstrate, once again, his devotion to Buffy, even after she's theoretically totally shot him down forever; it bookends neatly with The Gift (in The Gift, he failed to save her; in this finale, if true, he would be successful); AND, cynically speaking, it enables ME to have their cake and eat it too. Since Spike is blasted with major amounts of magic, he could come back as anything -- human, souled, hybrid, amnesiac, insane, the possibilities are endless -- giving ME tons of flexibility and enabling them to dispose of the relationship again if they so choose when next season rolls around.
AND it would be one of the few scenarios I can think of which would pretty much guarantee the return of the fans next season to see what happens, since Spike and Tara have been the only two sympathetic characters all season, and Tara is permanently gone in this scenario.

I believe this was AICN. Hercules posted spoilers on July 4, both for the season arc AND for the first eight episodes, that nobody believed at the time -- how could he possibly know so much, being that early in time? But with the benefit of hindsight, it's obvious that his info was in fact, spot-on (so far). Here's the relevant July 4 post, which is still accessible at the AICN website, btw:

We’ve got our first, very confident look at the first eight UPN episodes of the best television show in production, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Here’s the big news:
* Buffy and Spike become more than friends before
Thanksgiving.
* The increasingly powerful telekinetic redhead Willow is going to go from Marvel Girl to Dark Phoenix. Look for her to emerge as the season’s Big Bad.
* A midseason wedding is planned for Xander and Anya, but
when an anxious Xander gets cold feet on wedding day, Anya
turns back into a vengeance demon and seeks out the boy who
stood her up. But even in demon-mode Anya realizes she can’t
hurt her little butt-monkey -- and reverts back to human.
* There will be a recurring “little bad” this season as a trio of bored twentysomethings begin using dark magic to conjure demons. Nerdy Jonathan, last seen in “Superstar,” will be one of the more harmless members of the troika.

I don't know why. He had everything else right.
Interestingly enough, in rereading Herc's spoilers,
ep 9 was supposed to be written by Drew Greenberg,
and was supposed to be the insane asylum ep. In ep 10,
Buffy was supposed to toss Willow out of the house
because of her misuse of magic. I remain convinced
that this info was originally good, but that the
*brilliant* folks at ME decided to delay these stories in favor of the Buffy/Spike fiasco, esp once they realized that UPN would let them get away with. Feh.

This was NOT part of the AICN website info, and if it turned up anywhere else, I for one do not remember it. Would love it, though, if anyone else remembers it from anywhere.
While tooling through my old mail a-spoiler-hunting, however, I did come up with an Oct 19 spoiler from Sweetie in which she confirmed that Willow was the big bad for the season -- and said that Willow would ultimately die! No idea if that's true, of course, but it was interesting.
Also stumbled upon this (no idea if it's reliable, but the source says he has a relative at ME, so it *could* be. Though the "Doc" stuff seems highly unlikely. Maybe they were hoping to get Joel Grey back, but his schedule didn't permit? Or it could just be disinformation.
<
What I really wanted to post though was this:
'Doc is set to return, and be part of the season long big bad, along with . . . Willow. She will be possessed by 'First Evil' and I have heard that this could result in a first for BtVS in a Season end cliffhanger! What I heard was that Buffy will most likely have to seek out the evil and destroy it, or to kill Willow, and as the season ends
we won't be knowing which path she has chosen.' >>

Exactly. Leaving ME maximum flexibility, and the fans in torment (for a change).
>But what happens to the reset button theory. Or is that >just theory?
That is just theory -- actually, it's desperate grasping-at-straws by W/T fans who really can't believe/can't accept that Tara is being killed off for real. (Can't say I blame them for hoping; I'd hate it if it were Spike.) But I still have to believe that the odds are seriously stacked against a magical reset. For one thing, Joss said at the beginning of this season, while discussing Buffy resurrection, that "Dallas was lame". I don't think he likes resets. Secondly, a reset would negate everything that this season was supposed to be about, in terms of growing up -- if there are no ultimate consequences, then what does it matter?
>What happens with Anya? Does she stick around or kind of >fade from the scene.
Well, if Herc was right about this, as he was about so much else, she might just get back together with Xander in some way or other.
>This spoiler version also might mean that
>Tara is gone for good.
Which I personally believe, much as I don't welcome the thought.
