Subject: I have a theory - Spoilers & Speculation

I've loved this season like no other because of its foreshadowing and brilliant writing. No, really! Moreover, I am utterly convinced of Spike's redemption and the ship, insane though some of you may think that to be. Indulge a lurker for just a bit. Using the OMWF template, I've a bit of a premise that incorporates earlier discussions here, Spike's redemption, as well as hope for the ship. It's full of gaps, but perhaps you all have some clarifying insight.

Consider: In OMWF, our truth-speaker Spike sang, "First he'll kill her; then I'll save her." And, later, "No, first I'll save her...." I submit, by season end, he will have done both, just as promised. Admittedly, in AL, Spike emotionally admonished Xander that had he (Spike) known of the spell to bring her back, he would not have been able to let Buffy go had she come back wrong. I think that was utterly true when he said it, but that's what he's learned this year from his relationship with Buffy, culminating in his horror over the faux "rape" and whatever is revealed during the trials of "Africa."

Up 'til today, I thought Spike had to save Buffy at the end of this season: to get him over his failure last year; so the same tale would not be repeated as that of the Gift; and to mirror OMWF. Now, I submit, **he has to let her die** - at the hands of Rack, presumably. Somehow, he will be positioned to choose between saving the world (or others) and saving her. (In Becoming, he did say he wanted to save the world.) His chip is ultimately irrelevant, and he cannot get any more redeemed than saving the world (or others - Xander, even - whom he's been saving all season) than by foregoing his heart's desire.

THEN, Buffy can love him w/ or w/o the chip when she comes back b/c she'll be able to trust him. Naturally, she'll have to be brought back. Killing the heroine again is getting trite, but she's got to be used to it by now. How much can it really hurt at this point, and don't many of you want her dead anyway?

Maybe she doesn't even die, but could have died. Regardless, there's Dawn's blood, the doctor business, and all those eggs from last season and this one to accomplish getting her back. Perhaps Spike returns from "Africa" a shaman so he thinks/hopes he can save her later; perhaps Dawn does her portal opening thing; perhaps one of those Vengeance/Justice demons finally earns her keep.

There's been plenty of speculation that a big reset button has to be hit. For my kittens, I think it's just the spell which re-animated Buffy that has to be undone so Buffy can be made whole, not so much as to bring Tara back to life. Sadly, Tara's death was ... natural in a way that Buffy's was not.

How he gets to this place or the peculiar arrangements that must be set in motion for it to happen, I can't figure. Indeed, how we get all the odd facts AND a reset while keeping everyone's memory so they learn from it, I just don't get. Thoughts?

BTW, thanks to HeatherLong for her great Raining fic that set me thinking and all the discussions about whether Spike would choose saving someone over Buffy.
