Today I was hit by the idea that perhaps the reset button (which I'm still not in favor of) might be a wish by Dawn to Halfrek -- assuming nearly everyone is dead by the time the smoke clears -- that Buffy arrive in time to save Tara from Warren. That would set things back enough to bring Tara back and keep Willow from going dark and killing Warren, but not far enough to change Spike's destiny because he'll be in Africa by the time this all occurs.

Your scenario could still play out, then, if Warren once again becomes the Big Bad for Ep. 22.

It's a good theory -- to see Spike choose something over Buffy.

One that has crossed my mind, too, is if there's no reset and Buffy is ready to kill Willow, Spike stops her because he knows that it would kill her as well. Of course, I don't know what they would do with Willow then, so it's probably not a viable idea.
