Subject: Jess's upcoming surgery

Jesse requires a surgery called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty

Jesse still has to have a few more tests for anesthetic allergies (which he has) and to test his heart. Dr's felt this would decrease the current stress on Jesse's heart from the severe obstructive sleep apnea. He's also at risk for stroke and sudden death during sleep...nice eh? His previous head injury increases the risks for the sleep apnea problems and surgery problems so keep him in your prayers. A little explanation about the procedure. The dr was nice enough to tell him his entire throat would feel like it was on fire for probably 10 days and it would in all likelyhood require morphine...makes adenoids and tonsils feel like pleasure..great. Jesse, by the way, has no tolerance for pain.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (YOU-view-low-PAL-at-oh-fair-ING-oh-plass-tee), or UPPP, is surgery to remove the uvula (the small piece of tissue that hangs at the back of the throat) and all or part of the soft palate (the soft part of the roof of the mouth in front of the uvula). When a laser is used, doctors call this surgery "LASUPPP" for short. The procedure is done to help stop snoring or sleep apnea. If you still have your tonsils, the doctor will remove them as well. After this operation, the throat tends to swell and close up. To maintain an airway, the surgeon may insert a tracheostomy tube in your throat through an incision in your neck. Alternatively, an endotracheal (ET) tube may be passed through your nose or mouth and down the throat. Once the swelling subsides, the tube is removed.
