Hey you all! Yes! I am still alive and breathing out here in Idaho. Unfortunately my comp.access has been very random and have had problems with the computer once I have a chance to use it (I know, surprising isn't it Hal?)ANYWAYS...have been trying to keep up on the 'gossip' and you all frequent my thoughts regularly. Sorry about your car Jacs...you too Hal. Laura...is move with J a good thing? I'm doing all right! So glad to hear Arbor is developing socially! Idaho has had a cold spring, so I've been somewhat of a crank-ass (what's new?) I'm ready for sun!!!! Got to see Dawnette last night for a couple of hours of confering about internship stuff over a few adult beverages. It was great to see her and made me miss you all. My internship has been ...interesting. I am split between schools...an elementary classroom that has a teacher of the deaf and about 10 students all using ASL. And other days of the week I'm at a highschool doing transliterating. I think transliterating is HARD!!! but love it when my mentor says...Daniell, not so much ASL, Danielle, you need to shorten your lag time and be on top of the message. This week I will be doing a stint at a middle school working with an ASL interpreting situation, so we'll see how that goes. The best part yet was two days in a row I played kick ball with the 1st/2nd graders I work with! It really has helped me in building relationships with students...definately saw a switch in attitude and trust after the playing time. Many of the interpreters here have received me quite coldly...talked with Bonnie about it...how to handle stuff and start dialogue with others. Many working interpreters here are not very skilled and have little education...so I think I'm a bit intimidating and for those who think they don't need to be educated...really it's like holding a mirror in front of them and them facing who they are and what they can provide their clients. Bonnie's suggestion was -kill them with kindness, - respect and acknowledge their experience, -and create avenues of conversation that allows them to express their opinions/believes and then engage on their level...for example if an interpreter says "well, we didn't have to get degrees when I started interpreting" to say something like...'you are exactly right, and if you look at the history of interpreting...and in the last twenty years with law etc " basically bring them up to speed. I've also seen a lot of lateral oppression....ethical issues surfacing...issues of hearing parents with Deaf kids. Tough stuff. I've had my hands in the air a lot. I feel I have complete support from my mentor and with the interpreters I've worked with. What are you guys working on? What types of goal setting have you done? When you observe what types of things are you looking for? I miss you all and really enjoyed reading your comments. Priss..soooooo happy you are enjoying your internship and getting into it! Hal, maybe not spend so much time on the net...tired of hearing the busy signal (yes I HAVE called more than once) Had a bit of a breakdown last week freaking out about this being my professionand was looking into going back to school...I was thinking law, or nursing. BUT...have calmed down and relaxed a bit. Lynn helped bring life back into perspective. So...we're still an interpreter as of yet. Oh, yeah Lynn. He's good. We're good. My parents pretty much 'dissed me (oh brother, did I just use dis?)So...my plans of moving in with the pf's were out...so obviously I moved in with Lynn. That came with it's own issues etc,(mainly me obsessing over my life and how I'm not in control of absolutely everything - damn it!) but thus far it's been great. Miss seeing your faces and miss our jokes. God only knows my computer access...so if you don't hear from me...know I'm thinking of you.If you need/want to contact me ...feel free.Would love to hear from you anytime.Hope you enjoyed this short novel...sorry about the spelling errors...crummy sentencial structure...and inapplicable ramblings. Blessings and love -Danielle
