Subject: Gold vs Coin & relic Detecting Techniques

Howdy All,
I've posted a subject here that's ongoing over on Bill Southern's Forum. Low and slow for gold vs swing like a golfer for coin and relic. What do you think or what have you 'experienced' when comparing the two worlds of detecting. The following post is my experience. What's yours?? Have fun!

Hey Bill,
I think I can relate to your condition while using a coin & relic machine. I've done ok at that kind of detecting but I certainly need to mend my detecting method if I want to succeed to any degree!!

I'm used to looking for gold nuggets both large and small and the technique is totally different from coin & relic hunting by a mile!!

This friend of mine I taught to nuggetshoot back in 1997, retired to northern Nevada shortly afterward. He put the gold machine in the closet and started coin & relic hunting instead!!

Well let me tell you, he is a very sucessful coin & relic detectorist with a number of gold & silver caches to his credit. He's found a goodly number of 'tokens" that have brought him $1000 and up, like $1800 each. He has literally boxes of silver coins worth god only knows how much and some of them valued in the hundreds. 'Round' brass railroad locks that "Railroad Memorabilia buffs" collect and pay $300.00 apiece for all he can find :o)

His technique is nothing like I use (and taught him to use) while hunting for gold :o(

Nooooo sireee, he swings that detector like a golf club with the coil a couple of inches above the ground and goes like a "bat outta hell"!!??

Meantime I'm swinging low and slow with coil to the ground, listening for that rare coin that may be on edge down about 8" or so and on the fringe of detection. all the while he's kicking the living crap out of me as far as coin & relic hunting goes :o(

Ya think I should pay attention to what he's doing and not argue with success OR continue on my blissfully ignorant way, swinging low and slow, or what??

It's truly a different world he's operating in, there's no doubt.
