Hi Greg,
Before I began detecting for gold, I used to dig for it with a dry washer, sluice box, and gold pan. I found gold all the time but in very small quantities. It was fun, and I still love doing it, but I just wasn't finding big gold like the folks I see posting online. My good friend Majuba Tom bought a metal detector first and found a few very small nuggets with it that made all of my bread crumb gold look silly!! I bought a machine soon after but it took a full 18 MONTHS before I found a nugget with it!!! The amazing part was that my first nugget outweighed all of my gold found with the traditional methods. My advice to you is this: find a buddy! Either online or in the flesh. Tom kept me from giving up on more than one occasion and my online buddies on this forum have helped out a bunch! Hang in there and try to have fun! It will all be worth it in the end.
-Pat
