Subject: Question for you techies

In about 1980, they tore out some sidewalks in our old town district. Metal detectors were out in droves, and lots of old coins were found. At that time, the machines of choice were the original 6000D, the Bounty Hunter Red Baron (2 early motion discriminators), Garrett Groundhogs, etc.... We were all smug with our new breeds of discriminators, when along came a guy swinging an older machine: A Compass 77B. Since I'd graduated up from a Whites 66TR years earlier, I bristled at the thought of not having discrimination! Yet this guy proceeded to kick all of our b*tts! He tried to explain that his machine rejected nails. At the time, it didn't make sense. Wasn't our discriminators rejecting nails too? Later I learned about "masking" and "seeing through". So a few years ago, I found one of those antique 77Bs on Ebay, and have been enjoying it ever since. Although it's a bear to keep tuned, and lacks depth, it is excellent in ruins/demolition type sites, where nails abound. It can see through up to 3 or 4 nails to get a coin, w/no problem. On a recent trip through Los Banos, CA, I showed this to the counter person, who was in charge of leading people through their museum. He was baffled, and brought out of their machines that he said would do the same thing. We cross compared, and it was clear that his could not. So my question is this: Why can't some manufacturer bring back that characteristic (seeing through small iron), combined with today's improvements? With all of today's electronic marvels, it seems someone could make it smoother, deeper, etc.... They'd sell lots of machines to ghost town hunters for sure!
