Hi Rob,

We are agreeing! See my previous post on the Garrett hype.

I've been fighting a losing battle against the hype since day one. I even talked to Garrett about it, and told them they should get their official ads out quicker to counter the hype.

I strongly believe hype is damaging to a detectors reputation, and that the Infinium is now getting a bum rap because of early claims made by some people. People feel they have been mislead, and they word goes out that the detector is "no good".

Sorry, everyone is wrong. The Garrett will not live up to the hype. But it is also not worth ignoring. The truth is that many will find it a useful detector. But if they never investigate the machine because of backlash from the hype it will be a shame.

No need to post copies of the hype. We've all seen them. Some was from Garrett only dealers. A lot was hopeful speculation on the part of others. But other views were out there... mine for instance.

It is simply a fact that people want to believe hype. They want to be sold. Anyone urging caution gets ignored. It's human nature, I'm afraid.

I learned long ago that getting too excited over the potential of a new detector was a waste of time. What is remarkable is not how new they end being, but how much they are basically just like everything else. A few strengths, a few weaknesses, nothing more.

I did make the comment about the Minelab depth claims for a reason. Many have felt mislead by the "3-4 times" depth claims. And so you and I as Minelab dealers are often having to explain away that piece of "hype". Now as a Garrett dealer also I'm having to explain away the hype. It's easier for you, since as a Minelab dealer only all you have to do is jump on the Garrett hype. But please explain that little depth diagram in all the Minelab ads while you are at it.

I'm sorry your friends felt mislead, but really, relying totally on the claims made before a detector is actually officially released is just risky business. Always wait until the machine comes out and wait for a year if you want to make a safe, hype-free purchase. Get multiple opinions from multiple users. Relying on any one opinion is a mistake.

I only know one guy that ever claimed he would hold the $1250 price. I never advertised a price, until I saw where the big boys set it. I always figured it would be $1000, as that is the max allowable advertisable discount price. And so it turned out to be.

And for what it is worth, I have talked several people out of buying Garrett Infiniums. Just like I've talked people out of buying Minelab GP Extremes. I ask questions, spot people who have sucked up the hype, and proceed to explain reality as I see it to them. If they still want the detector after being brought down, fine. If not, that's fine also.

People who rely on hype just do not get it. It's bad. It hurts sales and reputations. I long ago discovered that a willingness to walk away from a sale now based on hype leads to many more sales in the future. Making that one sale based on hype means no more sales ever in the future.

So the Infinium may turn out to be a flop, not becuase there is anything wrong with the detector, but because it is not living up to the hype. That would be too bad, but Garrett would have nobody to blame but themselves if that turns out to be the case. They long ago let others set the tone for the machine, and still give it little notice officially. It does not even rate a blurb in their news section of their website!

And Rob... I do respect your opinions also. Please keep them coming. I think POLITE informed debate is what the Internet is all about. As long as it does not sink to the level we've seen elsewhere!
