Hi Bill & Ralph,

My fault Bill. I mentioned at one point that the 19 kHz X5 seemed closer to the 50 kHz Goldmasters in performance than machines closer to it's own operating frequency.

My good old Gold Bug, which I sill have, runs at 19 kHz. But I always felt like the sensitivity control just plain ran out before it should. I never run it at less than full sensitivity, and it is so stable it just seems there is room to go further.

The X5 seems like a Gold Bug when in the all-metal mode, but with a sensitivity control that lets you run up into the "danger zone". I like that in a nugget detector. If the machine is not getting slightly unstable when the sensitivity (or gain) is maxed out, then I feel like performance has been left on the table. It's critical to be running the ragged edge, as conditions allow, to get those tiny bits.

In a nutshell, the X5 in all-metal is like a Gold Bug on steroids, and with disc mode. In theory, it should handle harsh mineralization better than the higher frequency machines.

Seems like some convergence going on here. My GMT penetrates deeper on larger gold than I would expect of a high frequency machine. And the X5 hits harder on small gold than I would expect of a 19 Khz machine.

Time to mention here that Dave Johnson was the engineer involved in the Fisher Gold Bugs, Tesoro Lobo, and now White's GMT & MXT, and Shadow X5. Lots of people using "Dave Johnson" detectors out there!

I posted a question for Dave over at the GeoTech page. Since the X5 and Gold Bug are both 19 kHz, perhaps the Gold Bug 6" elliptical can be adapted to the X5? They both have the same 5 pin connector, but it would be too much to hope they would just plug in and work. Would have been a brilliant move to make them compatible, however! Instant access to a 6", 10", and 14" elliptical concentric coils.
